Default Change cluster

Hi.

I got a civic 89 GL 1.5.
the cluster in that car is this one.

but I want to change it to this one.

is it plug and play or do i need to add some cables to get the rpm cluster to work?

Sorry for maybe asking a stupid newbie question.

From my experience, if the new cluster is 88-89 it should be plug and play, but if it is 90-91 you will have to do some rewiring. I had to do this in my car, it is not too difficult. The rewiring has nothing to do with the tach, the wiring is always there for the tach regardless of whether it came with one. The rewiring is because they changed some pin locations after 90-91. So either way you won't have to add any wires.

Also you need the cluster bezel if it is 90-91 (They are slightly larger).

If you're changing an 88-89 cluster to another 88-89 cluster they will be plug and play.

ok.

So today i took the time to install this.
because i got sick and tired of not having a rev-meter.

everything seem to be working fine until i started my car.

then the fun started.

the only lights that was working was the two turn signal lights and highbeem light.. but they where constantly glowing. and when i switched on the turn signal, my temp gauge jumped up and down in the same pace as the turn signals where flashing

and when i re-installed my old cluster, all lights where working except the "interior lights" on the cluster.

It must have been my new cluster that was "broken" right?
and now I guess a fuse is broken since my "interioir lights" ain't working.

because like you said and from what all the other facts i found on the internet it should be plug and play and bolt on working without any problems.

or am I missing something here?

Sounds like you plugged in a different style cluster than yours...

QUOTED FROM THIS POST >> https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/diy-90-91-crx-dash-88-89-ef-hatch-2821961/

Once you have all your plugs setup to splice go into your car or on your harness under your dash and cut the old 88-89 plugs off that look like the picture. You do however have to know which ones to reconnect where so use the diagrams below to figure out which wires to splice where. Once you have them all connected your cluster should be plug and play with your new harness, all you have to do now is relocate the hazard button and rewire the dimmer button to the new 90-91 plug using the same method with butt connectors, if you use the same 88-89 plug into the new dimmer it seems to blow the tail lights/accessories/cluster lights fuse, I was having this problem so rewire the dimmer and defrost to the new plugs that should come with the buttons on the hood or you can get cheap at a junk yard. Any 90-91 civic or crx has the plugs you need. I have found that sometimes the below diagram is slightly off, however if you do end up with the wrong colored wire or pin somewhere use your head and cross reference what you know works with what isn’t connected and then match colors. I may have forgot something in there somewhere if so let me know so I can fix it.

Somehow i think you are missing the importance of the information provided (differences in wiring schematics etc.). This is everything you need to fix this yourself.

I seem to have some more problems guys.

It might be because i'm not using the clusters that are in the links i've been giving.
I do live in sweden, my clusters aren't the same as yours.

But, I have fixed all the cables on the 12pol except two.. from the car 1 cable is red in slot 6.
And from the pigtail to my new cluster I got 1 cable that is black. (on slot 2)

I have got all the other 10 cables connected to the right once, So when I start the car. check engine light, oil light and battery light lights up as they should. rpm gauge revs nicely. left turn light, handbrake light and trunk open light works aswell. gas gauge and temp gauge works fine.

But not the interior light, not the right turn light and not the highbeem light.
And when I turn on the lights everything changes.

then highbeem lights, both turn lights, lights up always, rev meter drops to 0 and goes from there, also my temp and gas gauge goes towards the sky. and when i turn the turn signal on the highbeem light flashes.

I'm guessing this has to do with the 8pol pigtail. because i haven't changed it.
And here is the reason why.

old vs new pigtail.

1) green/yellow - 1) red/blue
2) green/black - 2) green/black
3) red/blue - 3) green/white
4) yellow/red - 4) white/green
5) green/orange - 5) green/orange
6) empty - 6) empty
7) yellow/red - 7) yellow/red
8) black - green/yellow

I understand that the cables with the same color should connect to each other.

but there are 1 yellow/red and 1 black cable on the old. vs 1 green/white and white/green on the new.

How do I solve this little problem?

Identify the wiring in your car and write down a list of each wire color and its function. (Im not sure if the euro wiring is the same as usdm)

Then look at the cluster and pick a light bulb (for example the left turn signal). Follow the brass wire, from the lightbulb contact, through the ribbon cable maze, and see which position it ends up at on which plug. Now you know which position to hook up the (left turn signal) wire from your car's wiring.

Do this for each bulb/wire.

Reverse engineering at it's finest.

here is mine from my crx to gsr guages just for reference.
