Have you tried running the code? I assume if it comes on it's for a reason. Is there any other lights on?

Have you been messing with any of the wiring in your dash?

Have you installed a new stereo recently, or alarm system, or modified ANYTHING before this began happening?

Just a thought but it seems that when you down shift you are putting the car under load, which means more amperage draw from your alternator. Test your alternator with a multimeter while running and see what volts you have. You should be between 13.8 and 14.4 (This is with no load on the car, IE. a/c, heater etc.)

I just posted the same thing on another thread, but check the green plug on your alternator/gen. for CORROSION. Clean it good.
