ok so i went to the tire shop yesterday to get my rims taken off and another set of rims put on because a guy bought my SI rims, and he wanted the shop to do the trade, so as they were putting on the tire and was tightening all the lugs on the front passenger rotor, they told me one of the lug nuts wouldnt tighten on the stud because the studs thread was "chipped" and someone "cross threaded" it.
which was complete bullshit because ive never had a problem tightening the lug nut..

anyway, so now i have three lug nuts on my rotor holding the rim inplace and he said it would be $5 the the stud and $150 for installing it (1 1/2 hours using power tools) bullshit again

any ideas on how to replace the stud on the rotor? please help, im sure it looks easy, not sure what im dealing with tho.

Don't drive around with three lugs. Simple as that. Don't. Do. It.
You can get away with 4 lugs on a 5 lug wheel but not 3 on a 4.

I think you could have a machine shop put a stud in for less money however.

 

Bull **** you can't. I did it for over a year. And others have done it for longer.

As long as the other 3 are tighten to factory specs, you will be fine. Now, I don't mean go start auto crossing on it, but you will be fine to drive on it.


What sort of tools do you have? It's DEFFINETLY doable in your garage.

Your actually lucky it happend on the rear. You should have no problem just pounding the stud out, and slipping a new on in. At least that is what it looks like on my trailing arms.

Of course, you should pull the rotor/caliper off.

 

On my personal car, no I haven't. But, I was in a car that did. (95 ex) and it was NOT due to running on 3 studs. .

I am telling you, it's fine to run on 3 studs, period.

 

noo no no no, its on my front passenger side NOT back side.
and also, i still have 4 studs on the front, i just dont have a lugnut in there right now

i had the same problem on my 95 ex. the whole spindle had to be removed and taken apart to get to the back side of the hub. its not too much of a job. i will say go to another shop. i was only charged $45 just because they had an hour min on all jobs. but also like its been said, driving on 3 lugs is very do able. as long as the three are spec tight then you have no worries. hell ive driven on 2 lugs for 1 1/2 years with no problems on my 2nd gen teg.

 

Well if YOU had a lugnut there prior to the "trade"... Put a lugnut back in? Who cares was tire king discounters grismer says? Lugnut+ Socket wrench+ 3/4" socket+ clockwise = tightened before, and now, tightened lug!

 

i think hes just saying who ever changed the tire forgot to put one lugnut on??? or is he saying its stripped. its not hard to bang out studs and out a new one in could only take a 30 mins a side if that.

 

nooo its not missing a lugnut, the thread is stripped!!!
that is the reason the lugnut will NOT go back on

without having to go to a shop and pay 150 dollars when i can do it myself for 10 dollars or so (:

 

take rotor/ calper off.

grab grinder, cut old stud in half. Pound it out.

On the new stud you will have to grind the inside of it falt. (back side of it, that meets the hub)

slip stud in, using washers/bolt or something tighten up the stud, and insure it's seated correctly.

You can spin the hub over to where the bad stud is in front of the gap where the caliper was, it may help.

Also, if you want, you can remove the knuckle, it'a an option.

 

you don't even have to grind it. takes no time at all to remove a rear wheel bearing.

 

are theyre any DIYs out there ? or any tutorials or so?

Yes these are.

 

I had this on a sentra I had it is really easy.

1) Take off the wheel
2) Take off the caliper and disc (when I removed the discs on my hatch I needed to drill out the holder screws)
3) Hammer out the broken lug. A couple decent shots with a ball pin hammer should get it loose and it should then slide out. Like stated above aligning this with the gap from the caliper or if there is another open space will help.
4) Put the new stud in and several washers where the wheel would sit. The washers should be enough so that the lug nut will reach the washers before the end of the thread.
5) Tighten the lug nut onto the washers to seat the lug stud in the hub.
6) Take the lug and washers off.
7) Reinstall the disc and caliper.
8) Put the wheel back on and tourque.

Hope this helps, for the $10 or less I would recomend replacing the stud.

 

thats a lazy half *** job. do it right and take off the hub.

 

for that price you could just get a whole new hub lol

Don't forget to tell him, he'll need to buy a new wheel bearing.

 

if that was the way to replace it, wouldnt you think the stud would come like that? with a third of the stud head shaved off?

Hey. To replace the rear stud. It is really easy and take no more then 10 minutes with air tools ans about 20 with hand tools.

What u have to do first is
Remove wheel
Remove the two 12mm bolts holding the actually calipers.
Remove break pads.
Remove the 14mm bolts holding the caliper bracket.

Next

U would have to remove the rotor. It is held on by two Phillips screws. U would need what u call an impact driver from maybe sears.

After u removed the rotor. U will see the hub itself.

Next for the rookies. Put the lug nuts on the stud u are not replacing to help from accidental smashing.

Take a hammer and punch the stud that is bad out. It will fall right out with a little muscle.

Now take the new stud and insert it into the hub hole where the old one went out.

This part is very important. Take a but bigger then the stud itself and place it over the stud. It should fall right to the hub face. Now take your lug nut and screw it on the stud. Now use a 19mm amd draw that stud onto the hub by tightening it down. Make sure the stud sit flush on the hub face. Compare it with the others.

That's it. Pit everything back.reverse of removal. Good luck.

 

just take the the caliper and rotor off
get a bfh hit it once or twice it will come out
line up the new stud
then grab one or 2 old combo wrench's and a lug nut
place the closed end of the wrench on the hub with the new stud in the middle
place the lug nut on the stud with the wrench in the middle get it finger tight then hit with a air gun and re assemble

 

I've been driving on 3 lugs since i got my car and that was almost a year ago.
