I have a 95 civic ex with a stock d16a vtec, yes its a d16a. all i have done so far is e/h/i. It is also an automatic. 1st-3rd pull quite nice in full throttle but once in fourth it lacks the power to run the rpms. just wanting to know if anyone else has or heard of this problem or if its just the stock d16a. i dont plan on staying with the current motor, eventually going to a b18 gsr swap and 5sp. just would like some insight on the issue to at least make this motor worth its full potential till i make the swap. thank you in advance.

 

Have you done a full ignition system tune up and replaced the fuel filter? is the ignition timing set to spec? What ECU? Any CEL codes?

 

No codes are thrown, im not positive on the ecu ill have to check on that. the plugs and wires they were just replaced when the new head and gasket were replaced.

 

How do you know no codes are thrown? Fuel filter? Have you inspected the distributor cap and rotor? Is the ignition timing set correctly?

 

Check engine light never comes on and i have jumped the connector to make sure there are no codes thrown. havent even thought to check the FF. dist cap and rotor seem to be ok, no wear on button or prongs. dont have the means to check timing, next to taking it to a shop. but money is an issue there. like i said im just looking for any possibilities to check at this point. thank you so far

 

When you turn the key from off to ON(II), does the CEL turn on and then off after 2 seconds?

You may be able to get a free rental on a timing gun from an auto parts store.

Remove the passenger kick panel so that you can see what ECU is there. Post pictures if necessary.

 

ecu is a p28 and yes the cel turns off after 2 seconds.

 

As this point, I would focus on the fuel filter and ignition timing.
