Nitride vs cryo??
Being that my crank will have to be re-nitrided I called a company here in jax and they said it's a $500 min. But cryo is only $300 min and I know I can send my trans parts along with. So question is, as far as crank journal wear. Will cyro work as good or better than nitride? I'm still learning and I'm not a pro metalurgical engineer so of course I don't know. Im an aviation electrician.
A good micropolish will be sufficient if you are on a budget.
Both of the treatments you mentioned serve two different purposes.
Cryogenics will increase the toughness of the steel and (if performed correctly) increase the fatigue limit. This process works at the molecular level.
Nitrided crankshaft journals will have a higher wear resistance. This process is a surface deposition and does not change the molecular alignment.

Cryo treating puts the components is extreme cold which causes better durability or hardness. I also know that yes it will become harder/more durable, but with that comes brittleness. I play college baseball and a few years back they came out with cryo treated bats to try and prevent denting and preserve performance. What started happening is the end caps would blow off because the pressure of the barrel not giving, or simply the barrel itself would explode. Wish I still had my bat that this happened to. Also cryo treating does not change the characteristics of the metal, when it gets hot it will still react in accordance to it properties prior to cryo treatment. Nitride has a VERY high temperature tolerance and remains smooth/durable under all conditions which is why it was used to begin with.
