by the time the tow truck driver came it was dark
long story short, if you ever crank the car with a spark plug wire off, or are driving and have the rotor come off and only make partial contact or.. many more situations it fries the coil. autozone cheapies are like $25 and they work for quite awhile
auto-zone wanted 80 bucks for the coil and 319 for a remanufactured distributor so i said if im gunna pay that much its gunna be oem so i got one from the dealer in a day.
so i put it in and the car runs again witch is great but it sputters still so i knew it had to ignision resoning so i just picked up a set of plug wires and boom no problem it seems the number 2 cyclinder wire was actually frayed a bit from heat i guess witch inturn killed the coil from grounding out.

your situation makes sense though. these coils are so easy to fry. keep this in mind if you ever do a compression test.
