Random no-start in winter, then starts like nothing happend
I have a 1994 Honda Accord LX 5spd, now 228k miles.
During the winter months here in Virginia (not extremely cold, but might snow once or twice per season), I have a random wired no-start problem.
Symptons: I would go out in the morning, turn the key, nothing happen. I could turn turn turn, nothing. Sometimes, spontaneously, all of a sudden it catches.
Wired Solution: I put the car push it a little, and sometimes it just start as if nothing ever happens. Sometimes, if that doesnt work, I put it in 5th gear, push it in 5th gear (weakest gear) and get the engine to turn over once in 5th gear, jump in the car, and it start like nothing ever happened.
Do you think I could be at the very end of the life of my starter? I have had this original starter rebuilt about 3 times now. Could it be just that my starter is at the very end of its life? This problem doesnt happen when it is warm. It only happens on really cold mornings. The colder it gets, the more often it happens. I can not knock it to get it to start. I can only push it. It is really wired, because what would pushing the car in neutral have to do with it starting?
If it starts acting up again this winter, I plan to just get a remanufactured starter from autozone, but I am now wondering if this really is a starter problem or maybe it could be something like coils or something else not sending current to the starter. I am tired of rebuilding the starter. I get a 1 year warranty on a rebuild, but it always start acting up after the warranty is up. The lifetime warranty from Autozone sounds better.
What diagnostic processes could I employ when it happens again to figure this out?
EDIT: This turned out to be the starter. I changed it to one from Autozone and no problems since.
