Cut and re-weld 2-3/8" off both straight sections

2x3/8 is all I got to cut in the straightest part of the linkage?

2 and 3/8" is what we cut out of the straight section for my son's 88DX with a B18A/Y1 transmission and it worked fine.

Make sure you mark it before you cut it so that it's not twisted improperly when you weld it back together.

Since when? I have always used around 1-3/4" as a starting point and thought that was the accepted norm?... You can always position the shifter forward or backward by taking more or less out...

OP - it helps to search, I got on the Google and this was the first page that popped up...

Since about 06 when I did mine. I was taught to cut that much and it worked out perfectly for me. The shifter sits centered and I've never had an issue.
