Default L/W pulley and Balance Shaft Removal

Hey Everyone.

In a couple of weeks I am going to replace the timing belt on my Accord. Since this is such a HUGE pain, I was hoping to give myself a little pat on the back by removing that balance shaft and adding a lightweight under drive pulley. Does anyone have any REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE with these two mods? I dont want to sacrifice reliability, but I would enjoy a couple of extra HP.

Without removing the engine you will not be able to remove the balance shafts. You could remove the belt though. What type of under-drive pulley are you talking, Crank or accessories? Not a big fan of the crank UD pulleys as they are usually not balanced, or dampened. Using a LW pulley that is not balanced or dampened could cause premature bearing or oil pump failure.

The light weight UD accessory pulleys I have used and had not issues with them. Throttle response was a bit better but never really saw much more than that out of them. IMO they are more for looks on a stock engine.

I am just going to not replace the belt when I put the timing belt back on. At some point I will drop in a refurbished motor but thats not quite ready yet. My car only has 225k anyways. I found an under drive lightweight crank pulley from a Canadian company. They mostly make stuff for V-8's and people seem to have good things to say about them but I dont want my DD to go boom.

None of their product info mentions if it has been balanced (assume it would be...) or if there is any sort of product test certification. It says that it has been tested for track use. However, what standards did they use? Might want to ask them a few questions before you buy this.

FYI,
Their shop is in Ontario, CA 91761. That's California......not Canada

Hey Man, It does say that it is balanced. And in my opinion California and Canada are more or less the same. But thanks for the heads up.

That doesn't mean much. The crank pulley is also the harmonic damper on H/F engines. Without this dampening effect the crank and valve train will eat itself from the vibrations and resonance. Not to mention the valve springs will also be affected and it can cause early valve float.

And IIRC the crank pulley is different between the H and F engines, so how this one pulley can work for both is questionable.

The F & H pulleys all use the same shaft diameter and thickness as they are mounted on the crank shaft. The ATI Super Damper Pulley is also listed for both F & H series engines as well.

Yeah and We don't call people 'Brah' here.

I'm just kidding. Dont take it so hard! I guess I will just stick with removing the balance shaft and keep my factory heavy crank pulley and just not get the extra HP. When something seems to good to be true it is :-S.

BTW your car looks SICK!

Bizimoto has a kit for eliminating it, which claims to plug and re route oil to make it more stable, however they recommend a block sleeving, any insight?

also off topic, but if anyone cares to add.
anyone have any insight into changing a honda timing belt drive to gears or a chain?

Since you have to remove the engine to do the balancer shaft elimation properly.. I think Bisimoto is recommending that it is a good time while the engine is out to do something like sleeving. Since they are in the bsusiness of selling products/ services, it is them suggesting something that would be an up sell for them. For reference, resleeving is not required to do the balancer shaft delete.

I highly doubt anyone will be running a timing chain conversion on a existing timing belt motor, you would have no means of lubrication. All the timing chain setups I have ever seen are lubricated by engine oil and drain into the crankcase.

The Kaizenspeed balance shaft eliminator kit works just fine. No need for block sleeving. You don't have to believe everything you read. Some "techs" are great snake oil salesman!

In order to do a timing chain conversion you would need a lubrication system for it, as well as an alternate cooling system, ie electric water pump or sprocket drive gear on the existing pump, and some way to run it from the chain.

IMO you would be better off sticking with a belt or buying an F20/22C or K series engine.

can someone explain why one would want to remove the balance shafts other than eliminating rotating mass?
