the cheapest you're realistically going to buy the car, have it shipped and get it registered for is around 9000-10,000
and you'll still have a federally illegal car
9-10k will buy you a legit usdm itr which is mostly the same car minus the superior jdm seats. in many ways the usdm suspension is better. 5 lug all years with big brakes all years and the good abs. not to mention easy to source axles

Having owned a rhd SiR, rhd CTR, and a US spec ITR, I'd say just find a nice ITR here in the states. A JDM car is not going to be cheaper, and it is going to be more of a headache.
The second post answers your questions, but if you don't feel like reading it here is a quick excerpt.
"To wrap this up, there is not a single Honda ITR or CTR in this country that is legally driving on public roads. There are going to be a lot of people who tell me I’m wrong and I don’t know what I’m talking about, and that’s fine. I know the laws and regulations regarding importing grey market vehicles. These are not opinions, they are the facts. If anyone has any questions regarding grey market vehicles please feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer. This is a very brief explanation of the lengthy process. If I were to type up every detail, it would be several pages of information."

even if the car itself is cheaper in japan unless your in the military and the government is paying the bill the cost of shipping would easily be more then the price of a usdm itr

So NO, military members cant go to a base in Europe and buy a Skyline and bring it back on the government's dollar.
Cheaper over there Yest cheap here NO WAY! some time it is better to find a USDM ITR but honestly not to many out there for every one.
Yes you can import and register one but no its not Legal to do it. But where theres money and the right people you can get away with it. there some state that are less strict then other where people are getting away with getting them a title and registrations.
its rare for the goverment to go after you for illegaly driving and gray market car but you do have the risk of having the car taken away from, insurence not paying for damages if the car was ever involve in a accident. etc there is negatives and positive to the whole thing
it all depends and how deep your pockets are, who you know and where to go.
I my self have own several JDM cars and 2 actualy on the states. I gone thru the hole procces and it took time and money but at the end for me what counted was that I was driving a official CTR not fake and i used it for going to events (car shows, meets, races etc) and not used as a daily driver
If you have any other question just sent me a message I import JDM cars/parts to central america for about 3 years now so i might have the answear your looking for if not just simple go to FAQ on this site and there a complete thread on the laws when it comes to importing a car.

Andrew, just go to the EU and bring back and NSX-S or NSX-R then
NSX-S might actually work since the Zanardi here is essentially the USDM Type S.
