Default Cost for a DIY paint job

Havent posted here in a while but I am about to pick up a civic coupe for dirt cheap and plan on painting it myself. Im looking for a ballpark price on how much other people have spent on painting there own cars. Due to my current living situation, I will be constructing some kind of tent in the backyard and doing this on the cheap as far as those materials go and spending a little extra on the filler, paint etc. Ive done this before and it came out really well but it was like 8 years ago when I knew a ton of people in the scene and got hookups on pretty much everything I used so I guess what I am looking for is others who have gone this route and what theyve spent.

im in the process of respraying an evo8 in the garage.

so far for materials alone its been

approx $150 in various DA sand paper grits, masking tape, scotch pads,
approx $1300 in automotive paint (1gallon of paint, 1 gallon of primer, 1 gallon of clearcoat), and their hardeners & reducers, 1 gallon surface cleaner, 1 gallon solvent (for gun cleaning), surface wipes, tack cloth, masking paper, mixing sticks and measuring cups

of course theres cheaper alternatives. but this is what im doing.

I've got the compressor and gun already. The $1300 for supplies, is that on the high end or can I expect to pay that much for middle of the road quality paint etc. This is going to be far from a show car but at the sme time, I don't want it to look like ****.

the amount im spending on paint, isnt even custom paint. im just doing an OEM respray... by an OEM approved manufacture.... but it is a little on the higher end.. its definitely more for warranty type of work, and finish. not to say you cant get that out of a lower priced brand. but im going for fool proof

now thers NO SUCH THING AS OEM PAINT... but there are brands approved by the manufacture that they like

my paint i can expect to last the life of the car, as if it was never resprayed at all.

i live by the motto, u will get what you pay for... so spend accordingly to what you want from your finished project and product

buildateg... im using Sherwin williams AWX and their p27 primer, and their CC921 clearcoat....

thats not even as expensive as the paint i wanted to use, which was Akzo Nobel

Have you considered renting a booth will real ventilation and lighting and filtering? If I were to paint in a tent, I wouldn't use real high end stuff as your paint job will only be as good as your prep and your environment. I had good results using cheaper single stage and SPI universal clear. SPI is 200$ per 2 sprayable gallons, my base was 80 dollars and my primer surfacer was 120$ for the gallon and a half. Throw in another 160 for epoxy and some stripper.

Or you could go with kirker. Kits start at 217 for primer, color and economy clear. It'll be good enough for a tent job.

Hmmm.... Already have a compressor in my garage.

$150 for DA, sandpaper, body filler, primer and various sandpapers.
$120 for 4 harbor freight HVLP guns and regulators. (base, clear, primer, small detail)
$320 for Paint, reducer, hardener etc... and related supplies.
$50 for masking tape, wrapping paper, drop cloths and other misc prep things...

Why spend 120$ on HF guns if you could get a decent Astro gun for that price? What are the specs on your compressor?

Your prices seem pretty close to spot on for using lower end paints which is what I would advise with a "booth" like you have. Except one thing: use REAL wax sided masking paper. Wrapping paper will not work, nor will newspapers and you'll "unwrap" the car to overspray on every window/piece of trim.
