Axle Seal Install
Hi -- New Member -- Loving this site!
After installing a new right side cv half shaft on my 96 accord with manual tranny, I have replaced the axle seal twice and it's still leaking. Based on some of the write ups I've seen I'm wondering if I'm driving the seal in too far. I don't have a seal driver so I've been using a rubber mallet and block of wood and driving it in until the outer metal ring of the seal is seated up against the tranny.
This image HERE that I found in THIS thread shows the metal ring proud of the tranny by about an 1/8". Is this likely my issue?
Would I be better off sliding it on the shaft and attempting to pop it in that way so it doesn't go too far?

Is this a new or rebuilt axle?
Some rebuild axles have had the seal area polished way too much which results in a leak.
What kind of seals are you buying genuine Honda or parts house specials?

I purchased a NAPA reman which is actually an A1 Cardone which I've read decent things about and then when I did the seal the first time the dealership was closed (Sunday), so I bought a National (Moog Federal Mogul) seal. I've read in the forum that some people have had bad luck using Honda seals with reman, so I'm wondering if they're seated too far.
I'm unfortunately getting more efficient than I want to taking this all apart.

The seal I pulled out originally had the metal rim and so did the others I had picked up. The Honda one has no metal rim, went in without a problem, and SEALED - YAH-FREAKIN-HOO. Wish the dealer parts department was open on Sundays...would have likely eliminated all my frustrations.
