Icon6 DIY: MUGEN Fit rivet-on throttle pedal install for Civic / Integra

As many of you guys are now aware, Honda is offering a Mugen pedal kit from the dealer designed for the Fit. The part number is 46545-XTK-900 and they can be had for as little as $135 from most dealers. The problem is the throttle pedal is shaped slightly different and has hardware designed for the Fit, but with a little effort you'll find it's actually quite easy to make them work on your car.

Tools Needed:
Small pry bar or old flat head screw driver - for removing plastic throttle cover
Xacto Knife or paint pen - for marking holes
Drill / drill bits -for drilling, of course
Tin snips - for modifying backing plates
Rivet gun - for rivets

Step 1 - Removing plastic throttle cover.
In all honesty this is the hardest part of the job, especially if you've never removed the cover before. It's actually really easy if you try to remove it properly rather than brake it off, and since we'll be re-using this piece I'd recommend taking it off right. Simply place a small pry bar or screw driver under the top part of the cover and using light force pry it away from the gas pedal while pulling downward on the cover with your other hand. It should slide right off. Here's a photo of the backside of the cover to help illustrate what you're dealing with. You want to pry where at the top where the first red arrow is while pulling down.

Step 2 - deciding where to mount.
Once you remove the plastic cover from the gas pedal you'll see that the middle of the pedal is recessed. This will allow us room for the rivets without disrupting the mounting tabs on the edges, so long as you mount the rivets along the middle of the pedal. With the cover off the car, stick the rubber template included with the pedals onto the cover and place the MUGEN throttle pedal over the top and determine your mounting location. I decided on the holes seen below, and mounted the pedal as far to the left (towards the brake) as I could without running off the edge of the plastic cover. Once you've settled on your spots, mark the template with an Xacto knife, paint pen or whatever else you have handy.

Step 3 - drill the holes
This one should be pretty self explanatory. I forget what size drill bit I used but I just sized up the shank to the supplied rivets, just use your brain here. Make sure to drill on a suitable surface - I used a block of wood - and try not to drill through your fingers. Pay no attention to the extra holes not circled - originally I was going to try and install the pedals using the suggested mounting holes but I realized that the backing plates would likely interfere with the mounting tabs on the plastic cover and decided to center the hardware.

Step 4 - modify the backing plates
Take the two factory backing plates and create three smaller plates by cutting them with tin snips.

Step 5 - mock up
Next take the pedal and rivets and put everything together by hand to make sure the holes all line up. In the photo below you can see how the arc of the Fit pedal doesn't match the arc of the Civic cover, because of this I decided to keep the rubber template sandwiched between the two to close up the gap and prevent the pedal from rattling (an issue I've heard of even with Fit owners).

Step 6 - secure the pedal to the cover
Now it's time to install the pedal for real. Simply slide the backing plate over the rivets and squeeze them down with a rivet gun. Don't forget to place the included washers between the top of the rivet and the rivet gun to prevent damaging the pedals.

Step 7 - install the assemble onto the throttle pedal
Now it's time to slide the cover back on the gas. It's the reverse order of removal, just line up the mounting tabs and gently slide the pedal up until it bottoms out. Success!

Now you can enjoy that MUGEN throttle pedal that has been mocking you for not being able to figure out how to install it
