Default MiniMe Swap question 91 ef hatch

I was just offered a fully rebuilt d16y7 non vtech block with a d16y8 vtech head. I've done some research on installing this into my car but I was wondering if anyone knew of a step by step write up on this subject?

I just swapped in a SI Transmission into my car to get rid of my 4 speed that I had if that matters at all. I was also wondering if i could do this swap and keep my AC? That is a must! It gets too hot here in the South.

thanks a lot!

Searching does help... Here is the link you ask of...

https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/88-91-crx-ef-civic-frequently-asked-questions-faqs-1508680/

Also, just so you know: "vtech" is a crappy phone brand, while "VTEC" stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control

I explored this route.

1. if you want vtec but no fuel management it can be done (but why).
2. To do it properly cost some money and tuning (why again)
3. your only gaining 20+ horsepower on a bolt on setup(no machine work or comp. change.

Save yourself the hassle and problems. sell that stuff and put it torwards a B18.

there are numerous write-ups in regards to this swap... Google is your friend

you can use your si tranny and just use the ef bracket for the ac on the y7 block it fits

then just convert to obd1 via jumper harness'

and wire up vtec bra and your 4 wire o2 sensor

That engine will bolt right up to your transmission and drop in.
I believe you will need to use all your stock engine mounts and just transfer them over to the new motor.

It seems that you have a DPFI motor in the car still.
If so, then you will need to do a DPFI-to-MPFI conversion (12 steps, 4 new wires, really easy unless you completely fail at following directions)
There are lots of write-ups for this on the internet.

You will then need an OBD1 vtec ECU - P28.
This will not plug right into your car and you will need to get an OBD1 jumper harness.

Why in the world would you do that? Get the proper ECU and you get proper fuel management and vtec.

Pretty much everything these days costs money. There isn't any tuning required if you get the proper ECU.

20hp isn't bad for a basic motor with zero modification. Assuming that the OP is getting this motor for cheap makes it even better!

... and you will then have to spend more money, face similar 'fuel management' (so you call it) issues, and have a little more work to do than swapping out for the vtec D motor.
Gain would would be more hp... but what's the OPs goal?

4drEF, sorry those were some of the problems I encountered researching using the Y8 head I have on my stock d16 0bd0. In my opinion I still feel its a waste as 20hp. He will get a taste and want more. Just recommending skipping that step and going straight for what he will want.
