Help!
So I have a bit of a dilemma! My father in-law just recently bought two EF's, one a bone stock SI and the other a DX. We got them both at auction and both of them run great but we have and issue with the DX. From the get go it appeared to me that the motor had been replaced which I deemed a good thing. It had a bit of idle fluctuation at first but this has gone away after cleaning the IACV. I thought this might have been the root of the check engine light problem but the light is still on even after clearing the codes.
Here's where It gets fun. So the block code is D15A1 however the ECU is P28-A52 which after researching here appears to be from a 92-95 EX/Si automatic. So I'm just looking for some advice as to what y'all think may be going on and how we might go about correcting this so we can get the check engine light off and smog the car. I haven't attempted to get the CEL code yet but am wondering if the new ECU means you have to retrieve the codes differently? Is this a common upgrade? I am new to Hondas however he and I both have tons of experience with cars. Any and all help will be much apprecitated.
Thanks,
Louie

a d15a1 is from an 84-87 crx, and is carbureted. So do you have an ed/ef (88-91) or is it pre-88? also is your car auto or manual? the p28 is for a d16z6, an obd1 sohc vtec engine. I really can't say much more without knowing what year your car is.
Sorry It's a 1989 DX. Actually I think it's just a D15A but I will have to double check it. Per this link it appears that is the correct motor for that model year.

The car is a manual so I am thinking the auto ECU might be one of the reasons we have a code.

stock motor for a 88-91 dx is a d15b2. i searched a bit but i can't find an exact answer as to what a d15a would be in or if it even exists lol. assuming what you have is a non-vtec obd0 dpfi engine, you need a pm5 ecu.
Yeah that's what I'm assuming. I probably need to figure out if anything else has been changed as well. Maybe I should just try and find a stock ECU and plug it in to see what happens. Thanks
