Good luck getting a torque wrench in there. That is one of the few fasteners I use the two grunts method of tightening.

(You only use one grunt on the oil filter).

Look in the engine removal or timing belt removal sections.

I'm going to put my money on 40 or 43 lb/ft. I've done that job a lot and you set your tension of the belt first by rotating the crank to where the cams move 3 teeth, then torque down the idler to one of those.

Boom. 40 lb/ft I guess. This is a great writeup with pics.

Oh yeah, this is if you have a B-series. SOHC might be totally different. LOL

^I think you are mixing up timing belt tension and A/C belt tension, though the OP wanted to know how to torque the A/C idler pulley bolts.

I think he's talking about the A/C idler.

Removing the A/C bracket shouldn't be necessary and won't help as far as gaining clearance for torquing. You have to tighten everything after the belt is properly tensioned (so all components have to be in place). It might be easier to assemble all the parts with the idler bracket removed.

Just use a box end wrench for the pulley bolt and a 10mm socket/ratchet w/ long extension(s) for the adjuster bolt.

If you really want to go crazy you can remove everything, torque to spec, mark the brackets and fasteners, disassemble/mount/reassemble and torque 'til the marks line up.

You may be able to access the idler pulley bolts with a torque wrench by raising the engine with a jack under the oil pan. Of course, protect the pan from the jack with a piece of wood.
