Default Crank Pulley bolt loosened

So a strange thing happened the other day. Car made noise and lost power steering. When looking at the crank pulley it was off. When I went to look at it further i was able to just remove the bolt with my hands. It looks like the bolt came out enough to jump the pulley off the crank.

So my question is can I be so lucky to just torque that pulley back on? Here is a pic on the where the pulley goes. The key is sticking out a bit. Is that normal?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Pic coming as soon as I can figure out how to make a URL with it.

It should be fine considering it isn't timing related.

holmesnmanny,

thanks for the reply. Did you get a chance to look at the pic? Is the key sticking out like that normal?

Thanks!

mabey it just vibrated out. If your timing is on put a little locktite in it and torque it down

Replace the bolt, the bolt is stretching

So no one has concern how far that key is sticking out and the width of the area that the pulley will slip on to?

if u recently had the timing belt replaced or crank pulley removed for any reason it probably wasnt tightened back on enough.. if uve never had the timing belt done or the crank pulley removed for any reason then this is very strange because usually this is the hardest bolt to remove on the whole car.

go buy some loctite. and put it back on then drive down to a tire shop and take a 19mm half inch socket with you and ask them if they can use their impact gun to tighten it on for you... as long as the bolt isnt broken or showing signs of wear you can reuse it. but put some loctite on it. just one drop will do the job.

the key is fine it shouldnt stick that far out but its probably sticking that far out cause the timing belt likes to move when the pulley isnt there to hold it in place so dont drive ur car without the pulley on or timing belt will eventually manage to get itself off the crank and ur gona have problems.

so here is your homework:
-Go buy loctite.
-apply a drop to the threads of the 19mm crank pulley bolt.
-put the pulley and bolt back on and tighten it.
-go to the closest tire shop and ask them to use their impact gun to tighten the hell out of that bolt.
-make underbody covers or anything that can block access to the bolt is out of the way so all the tire shop has to do is bring an impact gun over and do it.
(i have a local tire shop by my place ive asked several times to either loosen or tighten the crank pulley bolt... THEY HAVE NEVER CHARGED. But be nice and give them 3-5 bucks for a soda or something. any good shop is not gona charge you for 3 seconds of work. but like i said. Be nice and give them a tip for their efforts.)

I wouldn't bother. If the bolt cannot hold the correct torque setting then it probably should be replaced. Adding loctite will just make removing that bolt more of a bootch than it already can be.
