Timing belt tensioner question?
OKay so i just replaced my head and such and i retimed everything and it fired right up but ran shitty.I had someone come out and time it with a light only to find out its out ALOT.Turns out the spring on the tensioner came off and the belt jumped a few teeth
now the motor seems healthy but i really dont wanna tear everything apart again to reattach the spring. Is there any cheater to doing this???

I don't think there is anyway to do it without taking the cover off. If you don't have to replace the belt, you won't have to un-do the motor mount. However you can get to the tensioner if you remove the timing belt cover and not touch the mount. I don't know if if you can remove the cover without taking off the crank pulley.
Sorry man....
Sorry man....
The spring has NOTHING to do with keeping the timing belt tensioned... It is only for setting the tensioner in position. Sounds more like the timing job wasn't done properly in the first place. The only way to fix it is to take the pulley off, remove all covers, and redo it.
i had three people check the timing after i had everything lined up perfect. It was done correctly.Either way it need to be put back on so looks like i gotta tear it all apart again the damn bolt is going to give me hell i already know this....
That's absurd... if you do it correctly you only need to set it one time. If that was the case then you would be setting belt tension with every oil change...
Say what you want... if it was proper then it wouldn't have jumped time... Oh well, have fun tearing it back apart.

Its what I was told by a few people to expect to have to do that and its what I had to do when I did mine. I ran the car for a few minutes, heard that there was slack in the belt. Re-adjusted the tensioner and voila. Shes been running perfectly for over a year now.
Do i win something then since i just proved that it can happen?? I had my mechanic come over and he said this isnt the first time he has seen this happen it happened to a friend of his on his eg hatch also same exact thing. And also whats the purpose then of the spring if it does nothing?
according to my honda repair manual you only tension the belt once and yes take off all the covers and pulley and set it right or get a new spring if it came of also make sure your timing belt is the right one
It sounds to me like the tensioner wasn't torqued down, allowing it to move around and the spring to come off. There really isn't anything else I could think of that could make it do that, once the tensioner is bolted down it shouldn't move, spring or no spring.
The spring adds preload while you are setting the belt in place.
When the belt is confirmed to be set correctly, you tighten down the idler pulley and the spring serves no function from that point forward.
Sounds to me that either the idler was not loosened to allow the spring to do it's job in the first place

The spring wasn't replaced and the idler pulley was never pulled against the belt with proper tension before it was retightened

the crank was rotated the wrong direction and there was slack on front side causing it to hop teeth.

Ask questions, do it once, do it right.
so not having anyluck bent 2 screw drivers and i broke one of the holes in the harmonic balencer!!! Oh and 2 extensions. What i was wondering is if i replace the harmonic balancer with one off a newer d15 with the 50mm would it work??
The same thing happened to me. I had to use a torch and bought myself a Dewalt electric impact wrench. I also had to go to the junkyard to get a new balancer ($25)
new problem i got the spring on the tensioner now when im tightening the tensioner the belt gets very tight on one side and very loose on the other.I tried to turn the motor over and it just switches??The belt is on everything but it still just wont tighten up.
That's how timing belts on Hondas work... I thought you had a million people that knew what they were doing? You sound like you don't even know the basics. As long as the feed side of the crank gear is tight you are good to go. If you get it too tight it will whine like a supercharger... To loose - well you already found out what happens. Do not ever turn the engine over "backwards". You do understand Hondas are Reverse Rotation don't you? (They spin counter clock wise.)
For the "balancer" all you did was ruin some threads/wallowed out the hole, it will be fine.

After setting the belt timing on the crank and cam and before you tighten the bolt on the tensioner, you need to rotate the engine by turning the crank counter clockwise.
I forget how much the factory manual says to rotate it so you will have to look that up.
The belt will then become tight between the crank and cam. The rest of the belt that runs through the water pump and idler pulley will be loose and the tensioner will settle that.

i got it all worked out its no big deal just to much time out in the hot sun starts to screw with your head getting a timing light from a buddy tonight to finish everything off
