Default 95 Hatch - do I mod the D16Z6 in it or swap in a B16a or B16b?

Hello all! My first post here, just have a few questions. I'll be getting a 95 dx hatch in a few days, I've been doing a lot of research, and I want to start sort of a list of mods and what not. Let me start by saying I am a performance man first before looks, the hatch is sitting on steelies, very clean white paint job, and the usual rust on the quarters. I want to start with a few bolt ons, but at the same time i want to start saving for a swap. I intend on boosting the swap, (mind you im 17, with low income, seeing how my parents don't get me everything i want). With that being said, I have been looking into either a b16a or b16b, I know the b16b has a higher compression rate and boosting it can do more harm than good if not properly tuned. But at the same time if properly tuned I've witnessed it KILL much more expensive sports cars. So basically my questions are, would you go with a b16a or b16b and what would be your ideal order of bolt-ons on a budget? meaning what would you get first, second etc... thanks for your time, and please dont tell me to use the search button

I left out another important question..., the hatch already has a swap but only a d16z6 was put in it, would you stick with that and boost that? or save for the b16 swap?

I have a 1992 civic si with a d16z6 with all the bolt ons. great motor pushing maybe 135hp.

Im looking into doing a swap as well soon. (same position as you, 19 year old with limited budget). Im doing the B18c1. I fugure if you do a swap do it once and get the high hp motor. B16 is like 150-160. B18c1 is 171 i believe. But good luck with what ever you choose.

As for bolt on z6 mods i have done:
Header back exhaust
Edelbrock intake manifold
AEM short ram intake
Throtle body
Fuel filter and pump
Proformance plugs and wires
Front/rear/lower strut and tie bars
Bwr coilovers
Bwr Lower control arms
And a few other things.

Goodluck! Eg's are great!!!!

like purple rain said you would be better off with a c1 and they are generally in the same price range

Here's my 2 cents...boosted d16's are highly underrated as far as entertainment value for a first turbo'd car. You can milk 180-200 hp out of a boosted, bone-stock d16 with a decent tune. When I was 17, I pieced together a turbo kit and supporting mods and got my stock z6 tuned for a total of about $1200. That setup made 190hp/169tq (still got consistent 38mpgs!) and was an incredibly fun street car/daily driver. Eventually you'll start to want an extra 70 or 80 horses, but if you're on a budget, I say boost the d16, do some more research then decide between b16, B18c, or even a boosted ls-vtec.

OP, report your first post by clicking the icon under your first post.

Ask a moderator to change your thread title to something that actually describes the thread. If one of us were to report it or a mod gets to it first then there's a fair chance this thread will be locked.

All threads are supposed to have descriptive titles so people who can help will be attracted to those threads and so later people who might need help can have an easier time finding the information.

I know where you are coming from but if you want more power a b18c1 swap is the way to go. If you turbo the z6 then thats as far as you can go. Get a swap pushing 170 + bolt ons 180ish and then save for the turbo. Correct me if im wrong but that sounds like a better way to do it.

its still cheaper and less time consuming to boost the d16 then when you get bored of it pick up another d16 motor for what a $100 and slowly start building that for boost and easily put down 400+WHP and which will cost as much as swapping a gsr in and spank gsr'd civs all day... dont underestimate the D like most people they'll surprise you..

Just without going internal a swap is the best way to do it.

yea i had a crx and peiced together a full ls swap and ended up spending alot more than i thought i would because of stupid little stuff you dont remember till you need it. i wanted to swap it in and boost but after spending all that money on the swap and realizing that i still needed all the turbo stuff i wished i wouldve just boosted the D in it and made alot more power than an ls and it wouldve been done easily with the amount i spent on the swap. i traded it all up tho for a hatch with a z6 in it planning on boost in the future and a minor build

So what is the typical cost of a b18c1 swap? compared to a z6 turbo build. The engine doesnt have to be almost new. Could buy one with like 100k on it.

if it was me i would drop the b16b and call it a day. n.a. all day!!! but if ur trying to make more then 185hp keep the d16 and boost it. it cost a lot to get a b16 to make big power.

I agree turbo d is much cheaper if you already have the d in it. I was thinking about turboing the one i've got but after realizing its just my dd, i just kept it simple

FJ rods Vitara pistons... 500 bucks I think
B18c1 swap 1200 to 1500 bucks

Turbo kit 800-1500 (you would have to buy this eather way)
Hondata 500

You do the math! I have a Z6 making 440 And I smoke evrything on the road .... I have low Tq numbers so I keep my tires planted to the road

A C1 with 400 will just smoke up tires and you will go no where

Whats that saying "lag for traction, top end for action"

Budget + young age = build the d16 like its already been stated you can do the build for cheap. Then after you build it up then you can save up for b or even k if you still even have the car or whatever your motor of choice.
