Icon2 Questions about California's Smog Exempt for 1975s' and older.

I've always loved old school cars, and I wanted a 240Z with a RB25DET. If the car is smog exempt, does that mean I can swap a rb25 to a 240z without getting it bard? Isn't the reason to get a car bard/ref is for emissions purposes?

1975 and older are nearly impossible to add emission components to make it meet today's regulations... By putting a newer motor in it that is very capable of meeting EPA standards, they will want it bar'd... It's California. There is no beating the system.

all kinds of wong info going on here.

First off, wrong section for this bs.

Second of all, the last year for a 240z was 1973.

Cars that are smog exempt (which a 240z is) means that they are exempt from ever needing a smog check, you could power it with whatever the hell you want.

World English Dictionary
exempt (ɪɡˈzɛmpt) [Click for IPA pronunciation guide]

vb
1. ( tr ) to release from an obligation, liability, tax, etc; excuse: to exempt a soldier from drill

— adj
2. freed from or not subject to an obligation, liability, tax, etc; excused: exempt gilts ; tax-exempt bonus
3. obsolete set apart; remote

— n
4. a person who is exempt from an obligation, tax, etc

[C14: from Latin exemptus removed, from eximere to take out, from emere to buy, obtain]

No. If the vehicle is "smog-exempt," you never have to get it smogged, inspected, etc.

Ok, get pulled over with an rb25det and see if you get a ticket then. Really think about it... What does it matter if a chassis is build in 1975 or 2011? Its whats in it that matters.

i personally own and drive a 1973 240z. i have a 1983 L28et single turbo without an exhaust. i live in Southern California and can say that the only problems cops give me is the loud exhaust. most of the time when cops talk to me they want to tell me more about the car i drive. classics cars 1975 and older do not need any California emission check.

No, it doesnt. What matters is the year on the title of the vehicle.
