Default Making a swap legal

Hey guys I am new to this form only a couple posts so far but I was hoping to get some info on how I can keep my 95 hatchback smog legal if I where to do a swap. I live in SoCal and mostly work on old stuff that does not require smog. I have a 95 Civic Si with the D16z6 and its for lack of better words a total dog when it come to power. I am considering doing a LS Vtec swap but im not sure if I can make it legal or not. First off how can I tell if an engine is stolen before I buy it? Is there a special proccess you have to go through with the CHP to make a swap legal? Would an LS Vtec even qualify to be a legal swap?

I heard LS-V won't pass but I know with BAR in socal since your car is a 95 you need a motor that's a 95 and up. No aftermarket parts unless it has a carb number. Gotta have the right harness and ecu also. I'm pretty sure if you throw a gsr with some bolt on's and a tune you should be able to make 200 hp.

if your looking to go LSV then i suggest you bar a stock ls then after its bar'd put the vtec head on it. just shave the valve cover so it doesnt say vtec anymore and no one is the wiser. The thing is if you want to still be able to smog it at your local test only shop if everything is not wired up properly and you have codes then you wont pass.

for an easier setup that has power just get a gs-r motor but remember the motor MUST be the same year of your car or newer. there is alot more info besides that though. The timing has to be correct. The smog test includes visual, functional , and tailpipe. (ive also heard your catalytic converter needs to be the same as the block)

in california it costs about 30 bucks for the first bar test which pass or fail you will be given a report on the car. if you fail which im sure most do the first time you will get a report that will show what the car failed at. you can also ask the referee what you can do to fix it. the second time you go it the cost is 5 bucks so hopefully us pass or the fee will start over back to 30 bucks

type-r is best but gsr is your next best.
you also have the option of staying single cam vtec but just buy a carb legal turbo and youll hit more than 200hp it would probably be cheaper and less of a hassle

I would go with a OBD1 GSR swap.
