Default 2003 civic SI pass airbag deployed question.

I bought a wrecked 2003 honda civic si with a front right impact and have all the cosmetics done. Inside the driver seatbelt has locked up and passenger airbag has gone off. I have a airbag already bought for the passenger side, but i was wondering if i need to purchase anything else and what the deal is with the seat belt. Thank for any help it's greatly appreciated!!

Yes, you are going to need the seat belt itself, the buckle as well as the SRS module. If you notice the buckle on the seatbelt should have compressed itself. If it's not then it have been because the seatbelt was not being used at the time.

Without the modules the airbag light will not turn off also the sensor in the front should have been replaced as well.

Where are you located? USUALLY these cars are salvaged with a non-rebuildable title. May not be worth investing money into it.

I work for a body shop, and not only will you need new air bags, new belts, new abs sensors, moduls, and everything reset, your goin to want to clearify that is legal to do so without proper installation thats noted, say you were to ever sell the car, there could be legal issues if the buyer of the car has issues down the road, could get you into a lot of trouble. Plus buying second hand parts can also be against the rules so to speak. Just need to get some info before doing so. Best case for your civic, look for another one honestly.

I was thinking of just throwing a 5 point racing harness into it for the seatbelt. so module and sensor then reset is what you guys think. so far i only have 4500 into it.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does NOT prohibit private individuals from removing the airbags in their vehicle, although repair shops are prohibited from doing so and state laws may differ from federal laws.

Air bags are a Federal mandate.

At best the law is quite ambiguous and leaves considerable leeway even to them.

My statement stands:
The NHTSA does NOT prohibit private individuals from removing the airbags.

No it is not ambiguous. It states clearly:effective 9-1-96 passenger cars shall be equipped with air bags. What is ambiguous about that? I sense some reading comprehension fail going on here.

I never said they did. I merely stated that they are a Federal mandate. You said they were not. You are wrong. End of disscusion.

It is NOT a federal mandate to have airbags in a car.
Individuals are NOT prohibited by the federal government from removing the airbags in their cars.

This is why I have posted on this thread, because of the spurilous information being passed around as fact, and people being killed or maimed because of it. There is NO law that says you have to drive with an airbomb in your steering wheel or glove compartment, and if there were, I would remove them anyway or else not drive anymore.

Just because some fool thinks you are supposed to do something, does not mean that you have to do it.

It is. I cited reference NHTSA FMVSS208. Doesnt matter if that mandate is not for individuals. It is STILL a mandate. Are you unclear as to the term mandate? Here I will clarify:
mandate-a command or authorization to act in a particular way on a public issue
In this case the NHTSA required vehicle manufactures to install air bags on ALL pasenger cars in 1996. It is ILLEGAL to manufacturer and sell a vehicle with out airbags. THAT is a federal mandate.

Wrong. There are laws that say you have to drive with air bags. They vary from State to State. You do not know if the information is spurious or not, because you do not know each and every state law. You do not know which State the OP is in. In CA (where I live) it is illegal to remove the airbags and just having the SRS light on can have the vehicle subject to impound. You jumped in with useless, inaccurate information. Nobody even told the OP that he HAD to install the airbags. Those of us that did advise him on the vehicle, also advised him to check with his local laws.

*The fact that you would remove your airbags because you felt like it speaks volumes about your intellect....

Not so, but since you think you know what the law is in California, why don't you post an official link that states it is illegal for an individual to remove the airbags from her or his car, not something that is just your opinion.

I actually sent each piece out to new york for about 50 dollars a piece and got them rebuilt. cost me all together about 300 dolalrs... which wasnt bad at all. better than buying all new and the system is completely new now.

That's incorrect; salvage titled cars are repaired all the time. It's only not rebuildable if it specifically has a "nonrepairable" title.

There's nothing illegal about replacing airbags yourself. There's also nothing wrong with buying used airbags, if they haven't been deployed.

It is not incorrect, hence the word usually. We are an Official Brake and Lamp station, we certify salvage cars a lot, so I know they can be rebuilt, but usually, once the airbags have deployed and the seat belt pretensioners pop the title is not repairable.

What state are you in? Maybe your state has different laws than most others, but here in Idaho, and several surrounding states, airbags deploying does NOT making the car nonrepairable. Most salvaged cars have deployed airbags, and it's rare to see one with a nonrepairable title.

I agree airbag deployment does not mean it is automaticly non repairable. I was only advising him of the possibility.

You said salvage cars are USUALLY nonrepairable. I'm saying it's very rare that they're nonrepairable.
