Default D16y8 on P28 ECU bogging till 2500 RPM???

Setup: d16y8 in EF hatch running OBD1 with P28 ecu, dizzy from 92-95 mpfi non-vtec

I checked timing, Hanes manual is pretty useless. I got it to line up with the mark to the right of the 3 notches. bogs till 2500, stutters taking off, high end is perfectly fine though.

inspected dizzy, seems in good shape. Any ideas???

Throwing NO codes

Could this be a failing TPS????
I guess it's worth a shot, nobody else has any idea, and I've found many threads with this question unanswered.

For starters how are you checking the timing eXactlY?

Yes, checking the TPS is a simple check... just do it.

just checking ignition timing really.
timing light hooked up to battery and #1 cyl closest to pulleys
jumped the timing jumper thing in the passenger kick panel
shot the light at the pulley
turned dizzy back and forth until the plastic tab lined up with the middle mark of the 3 marks
i think that's right

gonna buy a different tps today. i'll test the old one once i've pulled the throttle body off, but it's nice to have a spare anyways.

So your mounting tabs on the distributor don't line up? The non VTEC and VTEC are different factory clocking. Are you sure the timing connector is connected properly for your OBD conversion?

You say it breaks up below 2,500RPMs: Does it matter if you floor it or part throttle? Past those RPMs are you WOT or part throttle?

An ignition module (igniter) can fail on the "low RPM side". Have you continously tried retarding the distributor/ then advancing it to see if it makes a difference?

Are you getting a CYP/CKP sensor code?
The 'snail' that triggers the signal for this sensor is 180 degrees off between a vtec and non-vtec distributor.
You can modify a non-vtec distributor to match vtec specs.

fixed it.
using the non-vtec dizzy (which mounts up just fine, there is no difference except the plugs), I set the timing by jumping the connector and hooking up the other wires to battery and spark plug #1. rotated the dizzy, got it set perfectly in line. still had the same issue. (no codes by the way, had code 10 and 4 but my blu/yel and blu/grn wire were switched, fixed that issue)

my father suggested I take the old spark plugs from my B2 and install them in the Y8. so I did. Lo and behold, I have a solid power band now. I don't 'feel' vtec like I thought, but it is kicking in (7500 redline FTW)

Gonna get new wires, plugs, and dizzy soon enough so that I no longer have any issue. Vac leak also with the B18b TB, think I just need the proper TB gasket, ha ha.

So remember kids, when your motor is being sluggish, it might just be a weak spark!

... No, you need to describe the problem better. Nothing you said pointed to fouled plugs.

Oh well, great that you got it fixed.
