Default GM ICM for controlling a MSD coil?

I was having some various problems and looked into getting an MSD coil to beef up the ignition system. I know the stock B series distributor Im running is supposed to support like 400hp or so well, but converting to an external coil might keep the coil and ICM cooler. While reading, people were saying the MSD boxes are junk. And the MSD 6A is the cheapest box, and is still at least $100 used.

I do not need the features of the MSD box, aside from being able to run an external coil without frying my ICM prematurely, since my car is to be a daily driver.

If there is a cheap, more durable ICM available (Hondas seem notorious for distributor problems)? Maybe this would simply allow me to run an external coil without frying my stock ICM or needing an expensive ignition box.
