Default 92 civic will crank but not start

Hi Guys,

I have a 1992 Honda Civic 16v,

Its was running fine when i parked it one evening, i went to it the next day and it wont start.

In the past ,on occasions it has taken 10 secounds to start but always started eventualy.

It cranks fine, i have done a quick test with a old spark plug and there was weak spark - although i couldnt find my socket set to pull a plug out wchih ill do today.

I also killed the battery trying a few tried and tested tricks so i have that on charge now.

I went to it a few hours later and it almost started but was lumpy as hell and didnt completly fire up.

I have done some research and see a lot of issue with teh main relay - just to clarify its cold her but not freezing.

I realy cant afford to run it to a garage so any help would be most apprciated.

When you get in the car and turn the key to the "ON" position, do you hear the fuel pump being primed? You can take out the main relay and examine it for cracked solder joints and repair as needed. You might want to rent a fuel pressure gauge to check up on the fuel pump. Had similar symptoms with an EG that turned out to be a faulty fuel pump. Good luck!

Also another common problem it could be is check the cap and rotor. It is easy to check and neglected alot. If you have questions on how to do that look in haynes manual or you can ask in your next post and I will explain it.

Hi guys, thanks for all your responses,

Its starts and drive (for the time being)

I checked the plugs again that was fine

Whislt the baterry was recharging I took the Relay of to source anouther as our local Autoparts place(crap) didnt have any for the honda but may have been able to check for a replacment.

I then checked thef fuel, i took the return pipe of the injct system just to see if there was any fuel before i took plugs out again, it took a second or so to pump so out, put it back on and the old relay just to try it and BOOM it started.

So i think it is ether the relay or as i park my car on a hill at night and the fuel was low(not empty and first thing i did when it wouldnt start was to fill it with a jerry can) it sucked up some air and got a air block.

any thought.....should i replace the relay anyway(just to clarify it is in no way hot or even warm here in NZ)
