Highway rpm
What rpm is good for on the highway? I have a d16y7. I know tranny's make a difference but what is a good rpm not speed. I know y7 should sit lower then a y8 since it doesn't rev as high.
I understand speed. If the limit is 55 you have to do 55. But at what point is it causing unneeded wear? I mean you don't want hold 7k doing 90mph for a 4hr drive. For example 65mph on my car is 2,300 rpms. But if I wanna do 75 thats 3k. Since that's a higher rpm that more work on the engine causing my more wear. That's why people don't shift at 8k everytime. My thing is. Were is a reasonable rpm?
I am confused, what is wrong with cruisng at 3k?
I really see noithing wrong with it. I drove 300+ miles at 80-90mph, 4k+rpms last summer, and will be doing it again this summer. There isn't anything wrong with it.
The rpm's you are at now are just fine, and resonable. 2500-4k is just fine.

how does it cause more wear do you have fact to back that up

Higher engine speeds (RPMs) are known to wear out an engine faster, but we're talking 5K+ all day everyday to do any noticeable wear on an engine.
going 3k all the time versus 2500 or 4k for long trips really isn't going to harm your engine, heck i sit at 75 mph doing 3000 RPM every time i'm on the freeway and it really doesn't effect anything at all. IE: gas mileage, wear and tear, Seals...etc.
every cars transmission is geared for maximum optimization or "closed ratio"
so to answer your question, you really don't need to worry about those factors, your in a D series. These things are damned near indestructible.

Wrona it's common sense high rpms wear a engine. Think of it this way will a bearing spinning at 8k vs a bearing spinning at 2k which has more stress on it? The 8k and it will cause more wear. Not to mention all the other parts that are moving slot faster. This rule is well know that why people shift a y8 at like 3,500 rpms and not 7,200. It would cause more wear and the engine won't last as long. Thank you katastrophic I will assume anything under 4k is reasonable. I will stay closer go 3k thou just to make double sure.
Ummm,
My K-series is at nearly 4k at 70mph.
When I cruise at 80 on the interstate, it is higher.
So you are telling me that Honda plannned for me to ruin my car, just by daily driving it on the highway?

you didnt say 8k besides your car cannot even rev up to 8k so get out of that dream no duh a car will wear out more at redline but honda had engineers and people to design these cars to be efficient as possible dont you think?? thats why they spent millions and millions of dollars in research so no sitting at 3 or even 4K rpm doesnt damage your engine it wears as usual
in a K i'd just try and stay out of vtec (idk where the "true" crossover is since VTC is always on) so in a K stay below 5500, there's a reason the speed limits 70........but i cruise at 75 so i'm still up there with you.
guys remember each engine is different, people have taken b16s and revved them to hell and back all day long and they are still cranking today, what i'm trying to get across is be good to your engine, sitting at 6k everyday may do more wear and tear then sitting at 4k. Honestly the occasional redline isn't bad for your engine, they put a fuel cut in so you DON"T BLOW IT UP. But that said, by increasing prolonged higher RPMs will likely shorten your engines life span by some amount, maybe alot maybe unnoticeable....do what you want, don't take everything to the extreme and remember, lower RPM=longer life (don't quote me on this because there is variables) but too low is just as much of a waste.
oh and to wrona, 3k is where the engine should be, 4k is fine too, but no they didn't spend millions for you to rev your D series to the moon, THATS WHY IT'S A D SERIES.
if you guys want an engine to rev all day swap in a B series or an H/F or if you got the Dough get a K...they've all been proven to handle well under the stress.
Thank you for the input. I got many good answers. I have a k and stay well below 4 since vtec hits at 4,5k with flash pro. I just never had a d series for any length of time so I didn't want to hurt it due to it be my DD. Thanks again.
I think rpm's are more relevant with sticks than autos, since with the stick you can shift to any gear and get different rpms with an auto the car decides depending on speed and how much you are pressing on the accelerator.
