2000 Accord V6 misfires under acceleration
Hey Folks,
I have searched this forum and all over the internet to try and find a solution to the misfiring problem that I am having with my car. There may be multiple problems, rather than one big one. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Details of the problems I have been having:
- Engine is misfiring on all cylinders under moderate to heavy acceleration. CEL codes triggered. Once the V-Tec kicks in, it accelerates fine with no misfires. If I accelerate slowly and lightly there are no misfires.
- At times, when I turn the ignition I get nothing. No power, no lights turn on, nothing. After a few tries car starts normally.
Work that has been done thus far to try and fix the issues:
- Spark plug gaps checked. I don't remember what brand they are. I will check tonight and if they are anything other than NGKs I will replace.
- Replaced: Idle Control Valve, Crankshaft Position Sensor, Camshaft Position Sensor, EGR Valve was removed tested as good and reinstalled, and Main Relay.
- Yesterday when working on the car i noticed the positive clamp to my battery was loose. I tightened and hopefully that was the power problem I was experiencing.
- My old mechanic, who has since shut down his shop, plugged a vacuum somewhere to trick the fuel pump into pumping at a higher pressure to fix the Hot Soak Hard Start fuel blend problems that these cars experience. At the time I figured it was better than the Honda recommendation of replacing the ECM and Fuel Pressure Regulator. It did correct the problem. Now I am wondering if that could be a contributing factor. The car went a year and a half prior to the new misfiring problem.
What I think may be the problem:
- Spark plugs? I am not sure brand.
- Fuel pump and/or filter?
- Fuel Pressure Regulator?
- Catalytic Convertor?
With the V-Tec kicking in and correcting the problem it makes me think it could be as a result of too much air.
Any advice as to what I should try first, or what else it could be?

good luck getting help on here bro either this board moves super slow or its just i dont have a modded accord.....IDK
i dont know much about honda motors, but id say just get new plugs, maybe wires. do they have a coil or distributor?
cracked coil? check voltage on coil(s)
replace coil(s)

It is a distributorless engine. I doubt that all the coil plugs could have gone bad at the same time. If it was just one or two of the cylinders giving a misfire I would thing maybe.
the egr port in the intake manifold gets clogged and cause insufficient egr flow. your egr is fine but its not flowing when commanded to. causing a low rpm misfire i see this all the time. you have to take off the top your intake manifold and drill out the carbed up egr port. you should be good after that
I have a similar problem with my 02 accord 4 cyl automatic. I push my gas peddle down from a stop and I get no real response from the gas peddle. It slowly accelerates but bogs down until I hit the gas hard enough for it to rev all the way upto 4k rpms and then it accelerates but then it changes gears and if I dont keep it floored the rpms drop down to 2k and I have to floor it again to get it to move normally. Sometimes if I keep it floored it changes gears but the intake pops.it doesnt have a rough idle or a misfire. or a check engine light. I did a tune up. Oil &filter, air filter, spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor, cleaned the throttle body. theres no change and its an everyday problem. When it reaches 4k rpms it accelerates normally until 5k rpms. But under 4k rpms it has no pick up or *****. Some one throw some ideas at what it could be. Thanks in advance
Have you checked your EGR port for clogging? What codes are stored in the PCM? You can manually drive the EGR valve wide open and if the car doesn't stall out then the port needs to be cleaned.
