Anybody ever narrow aluminum wheels?
I have had it done before by a local wheel shop but the guy retired and so did the shop. I can have a machine shop cut them and maybe put a index lip to make sure they stay true. The real question is what filler rod do I use and would heat treating be necessary. They are just a cheap cast wheel but I really want to make these fit my car. The shop that did a set for me before seemed pretty low tech so I dont think there was any heat treating, I know that doesnt mean it was right but I never had a problem either.
Another guy that did it to show i'm not on crack

I just need to narrow the fronts, they rub the strut tube but would fit perfect if they were an inch narrower.

It would be a good idea to anneal and then heat treat the wheel after welding. You are putting a lot of heat into the material. I imagine you will have to have the wheel trued on a lathe once you are done welding. Seems to me like a lot of work.
It would likely cost more then wheel is worth to have it annealed and solution heat treated outside of the machining and whatever else you are planning to do.
Think I'm just going to send them to this guy. I scored the wheels for free so 150 a wheel isn't going to hurt too much. At least if they break and I die it wont be my fault!

LOL kellys' is closed now? i'm pretty sure they just cut and added or removed material from the wheel. i like to describe that shop as the dark ages of wheel repair. but they used to be really good!
i would do it the same way those American Racings where done... seems like the best way to keep them true.
BTW i still have a bright green 242 around here somewhere... did you ever get your 55 on the road?
