Default Air charge temps for guys running 30+psi with air/air

With the abundance of high boost drag racing exp. on this forum and plenty of low 9 second cars running air/air setups I figured this was the best place to ask.

I'm curious as to what you guys are seeing for your intake temps. I know the ambient temp makes a huge difference as well but I'm trying to get a idea. My setup is a Borg Warner/Air Werks 91-79, 3" IC piping, and a custom IC made by a friend with a CX racing core (I know this is part of the issue).

On 25psi my air temps where around 150 when going through traps. (130mph)
On 32psi my air temps where right over 170 when going through traps. (140mph)

I know my sensor is accurate. These where logged on my last 2 track outings, both with the temp being around 90 degrees (hot, I know). I just think mine is too hot and I wanna see what you other guys are getting.

Also, for those who don't mind, mention what core your FMIC has.

Thanks

EDIT: Core is 12x18x4

I ran a few times in the 1/8 this weekend and my iat's wouldn't go past 120 my engine temp wouldn't pass 204 using stock b series sensors

Everyone should note what they're using to log temps, ecu and sensor. It has a big effect on readings so if you want to compare data, you want to compare comparable data.

Thanks guys for the info so far.

I'm using the Stock SRT PCM and a OEM sensor.

Last year (28X10X3.5 double back door)I was seeing 60*-70* increases (start to finish) this year (24X12X4.5 double back door) with my new intercooler 10*-20*.

Would you say some sensors are bad for logging data like that? GM ait seems to be the norm for most build. Is there a better sensor for what we are doing? logging temps for 8-12seconds compared to minutes on the street or road course.

Open element sensors (air cross the small wire in the middle) like the GM seem to respond to changes quickly. This is what you are looking for. Closed element like gm water temp. and oem honda sensors still work, but respond slower and can suffer from heat soak. The turbo guys need the open element and need to know what is going on as fast as it happens. NA guys can get away with the slow sensors.

As far as accuracy, thats hard say because you would need a control temp and sensor that you KNOW is right to compare to. For that reason I would focus on the amount the temp rises from start to finish. Tony can chime in on this with more info.

Great info guys!

Anyone else wanna contribute?

From idle before burnout to right as I crossed traps my temps rose around 62-66 degrees.

I'm also gonna modify my intake so it can hopefully pull cooler air in.

I'm using a gm iat in the charge pipe. Oem honda ecu.

My iat temps drop the entire time from launch to the traps, then start slowly rising during the shut down.

I'm on a massive double back door air to air, 3" in and out.

Edit:

I checked my iats on my last track pass, 71 degrees right before antilag, 60 degrees during shut down.

On the dyno the other day, it was 77 degrees wot @ 3.1k and 80 degrees when I let off at 9k.

That's just using a 4000cfm rated centrifugal 'air foxx' carpet dryer style fan on the intercooler.

id agree with that. mine would rise to 130 after i got back to the trailer. but would never make it there during the run.
during tuning on a 85 degree day the temps never made it over 100 degrees.

Is this on a srt-neon?Where is the fresh air inlet at? If the turbo is in the back of the engine bay is it getting major heat soak?

yes its a srt-4 neon, and his turbo is actually on the side, he uses a sidewinder manifold

Thanks for the info guys. I'm working with the guy who built this one and we are doing a Garrett core now. 18/12/4.5. That should suit our needs.

Thanks
