Default Question???

In my 1991 Honda Accord i've been thinking I needed cv shafts but they have acted the same for over 6 months now. The clunk when I first take off then they clunk around corners, but it clunks on the opposite side that I am turning. So today I checked the wheel bearings, both had a little bit of play. I guess my question is, is it just the wheel bearings, or just the cv shafts or both? Does a bad wheel bearing make a sound around corners and when taking off?

It's usually the CV joints that make that "clunk" especially when you turn. It's due to the the boot being damaged/torn and the grease got dirty and was exposed to the elements.

Both boots are not torn. I still feel its the shafts though, because the car has 167,000 miles and I bet they were never changed.

Doesn't mean there isnt a pinhole that could let in air and moisture. It could be both. My 5th gen had mutiple things at once at one point which made me crazy last summer....

OP, if the wheel bearing is bad, it'll make a loud annoying whine sound. If it's a left front wheel bearing, and when you do right turn, it'll get louder. Why? Because all of the weight of the car shifted to the left side of the car when doing a right turn; thus, putting more pressure onto the left front wheel bearing which will make the whining noise louder. And it's vice versa for the right front wheel bearing & doing the left turn. It'll just whine, doesn't click for wheel bearings.

Clicking sound is the axles. If it clicks when you turn, the outboard joints are the culprit. If it clicks while driving straight, it's your inboard joints that are bad. Hope this helps.

YA that actuactually helps a lot thanks I only have one more question what could cause the front left tire to wear on the outside, and the right front to wear on the inside.

If one of your tire is wearing on the outside, you have positive camber, and if the other one's wearing out on the inside, you have negative camber on that wheel. You need to get it aligned, so the tires can wear evenly. Most shops charges $60-$80 bucks just to get it aligned. I do my own alignments; since, I work at a dealership and is a maintenance tech.
