Default 92 Civic coilover options....

Hey... New to Honda-tech, but I am part of the civic community. I have a 1992 civic si hatchback. Im looking to get full coilovers for street use only, im not racing the car. Not looking to break the bank so under $850 would be ideal. Also was looking at a whole set not shocks then add coilovers to it.

Just looking for a nice drop, look good, and maybe a bit of performance. Heres the brands i was looking into, anybody have personal experiences with any of these?

Yonaka $650
Blackworks $650
Tein basics $840
Form and function F2 $630

Any other brands you could suggest would be great. As i said tho im not looking for the best of the best. Thanks everyone!

Look for THMotorsports in the suspension sponsor marketplace. $800 shipped for hands down the best for the money kit there is.

Everything you listed is crap. No offense. The only thing worth buying cheaper than Koni/Ground control is Progress CS-II@$600. I've had my CS-II's for 8 months now and love it. Great entry level autocross/daily suspension.

What are you using the car for? Desired height?

Im using the car for Daily driving, rear shock is blown so just want to switch to coilovers instead of putting stock back in. As for ride high just want to tuck the tires in ever so slightly

Then I suggest getting Progress CS-II, either the 350/250 kit or the 350/350 if you can tolerate something with a little more push from the rear in turns. It is a bit rougher on bumps in the road. That kit is now $595 from progress. It was $580 when I bought mine 6 months ago.

If you can wait a few months and save up another $200 you can buy Koni/Ground Control and pick some good rates like 450Front and 300or350Rear rates.

If you're looking to tuck tire in the front and the rear you need at least 350, but I would recommend 400-450 as my 350lb springs in the front with barely a finger gap does rub on big dips in the road sometimes.

Here's my car on the progress kit:

ok cool thanks. Also whats wrong with these brands, im not racing the car they should be fine right. They wouldnt be around if they sucked and never worked. What makes them crap? Im just trying to find everything out.

Yonaka $650
Blackworks $650
Tein basics $840
Form and function F2 $630

Also i heard that koni's with gc sleaves was a cheesey way of doing it?

They are around because people buy them and don't care if they work in a year or two.

Why is Koni/GC a cheesy way of doing it? Koni and Eibach are hands down the largest most trusted and longest serving suspension component providers there are. Lifetime warranties on their products say enough alone.

More people track koni/Ground control than probably any other setup out there. I know mustangs, hondas, and miatas hold koni/GC in high regard for entry/mid/upper lever track use. It's the only kit you can use for the life of your car driving career.

Progress has been in the business for decades, Koni and Eibach even longer. You can trust companies that have survived that long and are so popular.

Ever seen a Yonaka sponsored race car? Or a Function/Form sponsored race car? Nope. Koni/Eibach/Tein sponsor all kinds of cars.

And tein basics are just plain garbage. Anything else they make is fine, but it's all overpriced for what you get. No long term warranty, and JDM hype sells their products, not performance.

If you're comfortable spending as much as you would for tein basics, order koni/GC and thank me 10 years from now when you're still tracking/daily driving the same shocks and coils.

That's about the height I am on my progress. Works fun, rubs occasionally on large dips in the road. If I had it all to do over again I'd get Koni/GC with 500front and 450 rear rates. Maybe stiffer in the front.

Once I get my h2b swap done this winter/spring I'll see what I've got left over from my swap and I'll get koni/GC or AMR for next autocross season.

If you plan on going lower than that, 450+ in the front, 350+ in the rear should be plenty. 350 rear is pretty tolerable for daily driving. I'm thinking with konis if you can soften the damping it will make a higher rate more bearable.

^^^Yup, that about sums it up.

If you have $600 go w/Progress
If you have $850 go w/KoniGC

No other choices under $1000.

Those are really the only two choices under 1k as far as coilovers are concerned.

Other than koni/gc.. was looking to buy a full coilover already done. Like buy as a set together, matching pair.

Why the **** would i be trolling, just trying to get some real info on coilovers. Not just get koni/gc the other stuff sucks cuz they don't sponsor race cars. They wouldnt be in business if they were all garbage.

I know the others don't have the ajustability of the koni's but im not racing the car at all. its for street use only. Im not looking for the best, just a decent coilover that comes as a set, for street use. Thats why i named the other brands... i don't need the best. Do you kinda get what im trying to get at? Just some real reviews on the other products by people that have actually used them.

Thanks for the info on the koni/gc tho, it is still helpful.

Just because a company exists doesn't mean it makes good products. Companies that exist for DECADES more likely make good products than one that's been around for a few years.

Please quantify the statement "pretty good". That really doesn't mean anything.

Koni / GC for quality and handling
Tein Basis (not BASIC) for a good drop and decent ride comfort ($665)

Most coilovers under $1000 are all very similar in quality, some worse than others.

I would stay away from DME .... or pray you never have a problem with them.

I sure hope the Basis is better than the Tein Basic, those things are about pathetic for their price point.

I've been very happy with my Progress CS-II, $580 when I bought them and many users have put years of daily/track service on them. Hard to beat their customer support too.

Even still, I wish I'd gotten Koni/GC with stiffer rates. Progress doesn't offer anything stiffer for their entry level coilover. After 5 autocross events and the novice school I'm already getting a tad more body roll than I'd like with a 22mm rear swaybar. Got my 22mm front installed last week, hoping that helps a bit.

Tein Basic were lacking for the money. The new Basis are cheaper, go lower, better coating for bad weather. However, they haven't fixed the stiffness at all. We have alot of people who are happy with them though.

Progress makes a great product (if you can get it haha) Its not at all rare for us to have part numbers on backorder with them for over 6 months. But, if the product is in hand, good stuff for sure.
