I want to do this on my NA car. Any issues with bugs getting sucked in there, or burnout trash and or rocks tossed in by the guy in front of you? I'm just being cautious. Seems like crud could get tossed in there.

Do you pop a screen in there somewhere, or just leave that thing wide open and if you ingest a bumble bee or grasshopper that's how it is.

I've never done it, so truly have no opinion and don't have any personal experience to fall back on. Other than occasionally getting a small rock tossed on my car from somebody in the burnout box. and finding bugs on the car after a long weekend at the track.

 

No screen and never had an issue with anything getting sucked in.

 

i had a piece of track asfault? land in my inlet pipe threw my headlight hole. as soon as i shifted into sencond the car fell on it's face.

babied it back to the pits and removed the pieces out of the pipe. This led to my turbo failing a couple months later.

next time i will have someone stand in front of the headlight hole so it doesn't happen again.

 

ive always see this how much can it help time wise?

 

last year on my true street 61mm setup it would only making 23psi (gates closed) I picked up 4psi (27psi) on the big end buy fabbing up a ram air to my turbo. Went from 10.3x to 10.0x. I'll always take free HP!! And never had a problem sucking up anything.

I wouldn't be too worried about this at the track on an all motor car. When I had a plenum manifold I never had an issue. Even with itb's I don't run screens, I was a little skeptical at first about the rubber coming off my tire getting sucked up. But never happened so I guess its okay

 

I run a screen. You wouldn't believe how many bugs end up in that thing in a single pass

 

No problems yet. Lots of bugs on my VS by the end of a track day though. Whatever, I guess they just get vaporized :D

You guys think the screen can affect flow?

 

you'd think it would have to. Anybody that's opened a screen door in a stiff wind will testify to the fact that it'll rip the hinges off if left alone. just screen in a frame. catching madd amounts of wind, enough to rip the door out of your hand.

 

Well maybe not a real fine screen like that. I'm sure that would affect flow greatly if the holes were that small. But what if the screen holes were less than 1/4" Would that affect the volume and the velocity of air into a turbo or inside an intake pipe.

 

Agreed, that seems reasonable. I just know how many grasshoppers we have around here. Those things are huge. Like bigger than a valve, huge. But surely not tough enough to overcome a 70 pound valve spring...CRUNCH...

Rocks do worry me though. we see a lot of those end up on the track with steet cars. those little 1/4" to 3/8" diameter ones that get shook out of the fenders when a guy does a burnout or launch. I've taken them to the windshield at our track from the next guy to do a burnout, he's flinging them all over. Only takes one.

I got hit in the arm with one so hard one time it drew blood. Just like a paint ball kinda thing.

I'm starting to feel like it might just depend on your track. If you have paved pits and fewer guys with daily drivers making passes, you'd prolly be fine without a screen. less junk on the ground to get flung around.

Sorta sounds like it could be a country western song title about a guy with a big ****. "get your junk off the ground"...

I remember last year at wcf... seeing jakes girlfriend always standing right in front of his inlet.....
He told me it keeps the rocks and **** out..while the guy in front does his burnout....

 

Also i ran an open pipe years ago..... at the end of the pass the throttle stuck open...
It turned out that a little piece of wood mulch got stuck between the throttle plate as soon as i lifted causing the throttle to stick open..... TRUE STORY !!! but to this day... i still run an open pipe with no screen. Lol

Because your GF won't be infront of it all the way down the track.

I used the screen on the dyno as well, made over 600 with no issues. I went to the store and bought a food strainer and cut the mesh out. It's a lot stronger than buying metal window screen.

 

I dont really have a built "all motor" car but I do have a hatch with a stock B16. First time at the track I was running 14.7 at 92 with a regular short ram with a filter. Next time at the track on an even hotter day I put the intake out of my headlight and I didnt even have a velocity stack at the time and ran 14.0 at 98. I gained 6 mph by just putting the intake out of the headlight. No other changes were made. A year later I went to the track again except I had a velocity stack this time and the times and traps were exactly the same. I guess a velocity stack had no effect on my car?

Also I had no screen or anything else to block bugs, rocks, etc. Have not had any problems but I guess there is a chance something could get in there.

 

Well, I wasn't just asking for the sake of it, I went and DID IT! haHA!

Here's my opinion of where the thread went. I think forced induction guys aren't quite as worried about ingesting track crud as the NA guys. My take on it is that the screen is a good thing.

And like one of the other posters here, I also feel like it helped my mph a bit.

Here's what I did.

Took out the headlight and got an idea where I'd like the stack to go.


whipped one up using 3" intercooler tubing and a 3" v-stack from a blox air filter.


added a tab to help hold it in place. very strong. gotta withstand 100mph air.


end result with screen installed. (Yea, I know, I gotta build a hood scoop or cover for the engine, and finish up the headlight opening.)
