question about speedometer and wheel size
Hi i have 17" konigs with kuhmo's on my 00' ex currently.. Some people have told me that i'm losing power because they are too big... however i recently compared them to my stock honda wheels and they are nearly the same size and i'm willing to bet my konigs weigh less. My question is, if i get 15's with falken azenis, won't this really throw off my speedometer? I want better performance but not a headache, perhaps i should just get falken azeni's on my konigs? Plus my coupe isn't exactly a small car, i'm assuming it would look a little strange with small tires/rims even with a 2" drop.
205/40-17 tires are roughly the same height as your 185/65-14s that came stock. Most likely your new wheel tires still weigh less than stock steelies. The advantage of 15's would be lower total weight of wheel and tire, as well as slightly better gearing from a smaller tire (your speedo will be off 1.7% if you go with 205/50-15, so it would show 61mph when you're actually doing 60).
Thanks for enlightening me. I stupidly thought that when I bought tires for 15" rotas, that the corresponding tires would be "low profile" like my 17" ones. I'm so used to having them on, that i'm not sure having a larger tire and smaller rim would be aethetically appealing to me anymore. However, If it does help me get more hp to the ground as well as helping launches, I'm sure I can deal with it. My friend won't let me live down my defeat to his stock escort.
It's not like I have any mods cept a AEM cold air intake, and his car has to be much lighter than mine, it's the gutter bottom end model hehehe.

i don't know much about the whole speedo and wheel size thing, but your car will look just fine dropped with 15's. I have 15's, many people on here do and it looks great.
you can calculate your tire sizes versus stock and compare them to see if your speedometer will be off. it's pretty nifty: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
