Can't get speedometer to work!
Hello. I am new to the site. I have browsed the forums in the past, but first time signing up and posting. I imagine I will be posting a lot in the future.
A little over a month ago I purchased a 94 Honda Civic DX hatchback. It had some modifications done to it before I purchased it that I may share later, but those relavent to this post are as follows:
- D16Z6 VTEC and EX manual 5sp trans out of 90,000 mile EX coupe.
Now, since I got this car, it has had an issue with the speedometer/odometer/trip. It will work, but only VERY rarely. I have removed the guage cluster. I took some fine grit sandpaper to the traces, and got them nice and polished down to nice clean copper on the contacts behind the speedometer, as well as the 4 tabs along the sides where the socket plugs in. I still cannot get the speedometer to work. Any suggestions?

When I looked at it, it seemed to be plugged in.
Edit: Just went out, and made sure. It was plugged in securely. I unplugged it, and plugged it back in to be 100% certain
Edit 2: Just drove it down the street to see if that might have worked. Still not working.

Sometimes the VSS takes a **** or more often its the plug that inserts into the sensor that corrodes and doesnt make contact anymore. remember, the car is close to 18 years old.
You cant buy just the plug, but you can try and cut off the plug, try and take it apart and clean it then solder it back together.

Pull the vss plug off and look inside. Its probably corroded. Its common on these years. I just went through the same thing on my 94 coupe. I ended up having to replace the pigtail at the vss and also I went through two speedos to find a good working one. Its worked perfectly ever since.
