Default 2nd to 3rd gear change problem

hi, this is my issue,

i race on a dirt oval and was using a gearbox with a long 2nd gear,(m2j4) i'd start the race in 2nd and stay in it, prob was i was hitting the rpm limit so i switched to a accord type r gearbox (u2q7) which has very short gearing, i still start in 2nd but have to change into 3rd very quickly, i'm finding this very difficult to do, 4 out of 5 times i miss it, the engine wont quite pull 3rd gear off of the line,

is there any way of adjusting the selectors so that 2nd gear is where 4th is so i dont have to go across the gate, it would be a straight push forward on the gearstick?

i cant really afford to have custom gears made unless anyone knows of someone who would do it at a reasonable price,

many thanks Adam

Suspect that you could start this with a better title and get help sooner.

What is the reason for missing the shifts so many times? Is the 3rd shift gate feeling like hitting a wall when you go into it? One easy solution on that series of transmissions is to zip tie the cables together to keep them from flexing around causing shift difficulty if you have done so already? Also what about tire size? Are you limited to a certain tire size?? Do you get a lot of wheel spin since that will also raise RPMs real quick. Not sure that shifting the gates around is gonna help vs. getting the shifting down properly and the correct gear ratio. Would look towards getting your setup working first before diving into anything custom.

yeah it feels exactly like that, hits and will not go in untill a few attemps. will tying the cables together help?
can the selecters be set so that 2nd and 3rd are inline?
i'd rather spend money on the engine instead of custom parts. if i did it may even pull 3rd from the line,
tires are 195 50 15 which is the smallest i can get on, once going the gearing is spot on,

Yes, keeping the cables does keep them from flexing around. If the trans has a worn sleeve, this will also cause a similar problem. The teeth on the sleeve will wear down and smash over making the sleeve difficult to slide up and down on the center hub. So could be a couple of issues. Does it grind at all?? Putting a taller wheel will give you a little more RPM..but, if it works..I would just stick with it.

no grinding just wont go in, its frustrating cause it's one of the quickest cars in my class, we only do about 6-8 laps of a quarter mile oval, straight line start with 8 cars, when i miss a gear it means i'm last into the corner and its very difficult to get any higher than about 4th when i should be in top 3,

this is a vid so you can see the kind of racing i do.

ok this is what i'm going to do,
remove 4th and 5th gear from the input shaft, remove 1st gear from the output shaft, then weld together the two selector rods for 1st to 4th gear,
this will give me 2nd gear where 2nd and 4th used to be and 3rd gear where 1st and 3rd were, no gate to cross, just a simple push of the stick to change gear,

Thats some sweet racing!! I am still contemplating in building an oval track car..but I already got too many projects! Are you trying to limit yourself to 2 gears only? I think you just need to make sure that the internals are kosher and also make sure that your clutch is operating consistently. I will PM you some info
