This is my second motor I've built and I'm running out of ideas as to why it won't start.

First off, my motor is hard to turn with the head on. Turning by hand is impossible, even with the spark plugs/cams out. So I first checked my timing. Timing is dead on and there are no bent valves, or valves hitting the pistons. It will turn with my starter(brand new), but it is fairly slow. It is getting spark, fuel, and it has compression. It's pumping oil just fine into the head and I'm not getting any CELs. It is also shooting out exhaust as I turn it over. I just can't seem to understand why the motor is so hard to turn over. I figured it would be hard, seeing as it is fresh, but I've never had this big of a problem before. It seems that if I figure that out, I might be able to get it started. Any ideas? My battery is fully charged btw.

 

not enough cranking fuel?

 

I've primed it about 20 times lol. And it has a half a tank of gas. I'll keep trying though.

 

maby you have a very tight clearance on your bearings?

Did you torque the main down and check the crank spin's freely when assembling ? Your crank maybe not be straight (and yes it can happen if its not stored correctly). Somethings not right anyway. I'd start pulling the main caps off and inspecting the bearing if i was you.

 

Check your valve lash.

 

It rotated freely all the way until it sat on the stand for three months.

Valve lash was way off. I set it and the exhaust is 0.008" and intake 0.006". It fires and acts like it wants to run and then just stops.

 

Lets verify.

You got spark and fuel? How do you know?? Stick a screw driver in the spark plug wire and hold it to the body, make sure you can see the spark.. pull the rail, make sure ALL injectors fire on a crank over, it'll be good to have a friend or two hold the rail and injectors, otherwise they'll fly out lol..

Valve lash would effect compression and therefore effect starting, lets just go down the basics..

Also check all your fuses under the hood and dash. I've had many cars not start because a fuse was blown and was failed to get checked for..

Why is your motor so hard to turn, what are you clearances.. bearings and piston clearances... regardless of who assembled the motor, a good rule of thumb is to rotate the crank whenever something is tighten down.. every time a main cap, or a rod cap is tighten down the motor should spin freely.. really weird..

Sitting on a stand for 3 months, is it possible some "rust" may have formed?

 

I finally got it started. Apparently on the start up map, I had selected the wrong map sensor somehow. Switched it to the stock one, fired on up.

Oh man, I had that same problem for a day. It was frustrating checking out all of your install! When I finally gave up, I just asked my tuner for a reflash for ***** & giggles. Same problem showed up and sure enough, we had the wrong MAP chosen as well.

Thats good to hear that you got it fired up, so how does it run? It sounds weird that you couldnt spin the crank by hand...

 

It runs well and I can rotate it by hand now with a little effort. I guess it just needed some starting action first lol.
