Default New Motor- Couple Tuning Questions

Picked up a b20b/b18c motor.. It's had LOTS of work done, but all the receipts and **** was lost, and no one knows what exactly was done.. It was tuned on a speed innovations ECU (tuned to run really rich because previous owner couldn't afford a full tune).. I have nothing against speed innovations, but they're not as reputable as I'd like..

The ecu/car/motor was chipped to redline at 10k, so I know the b20 block has had work done to it..

Here's my question..

Would it be a smarter decision to have the speed innovations ecu dyno tuned, or send my other p28 in to phearable.net and have them put a basemap on it, then go have that dyno tuned?

My problem is that I don't fully understand the difference between having a basemap/tune done to ecu and having the car physically on a dyno and being messed with..

I apologize for the lack of knowledge and what not, but I'm in some desperate need of some help with this situation..

I'm expecting some questions to come piling in, so feel free, I'm aware I didn't make much sense

A dyno tune is much better than a basemap/custom map that you would buy online from any tuner.

Basemap/tune (aka Desktop tuning) is plugging in approximate values into software to try and make the engine setup run most efficient as possible. Key word there is "approximate" or aka guessing what will make your car run adequately.

Dyno tuning is done by monitoring the engine as it's running and then plugging in the precise values that will make the engine run properly. Key word here is "precise". No guessing values when you actually have the car on the dyno.

As for whether or not to get your ECU chipped you should see if the one you have will work first. Remove your current ECU from the Car. Open it up and see how it has been chipped. If it has a removable 28pin EEPROM chip and a 4 pin header in the CN2 location. Most competent tuners should be able to dyno tune it for you.

exactly what i wanted to hear..

so lets say i take it apart and it has a removable 28pin eeprom chip and i go have it dyno tuned.. would i be able to yield the same results by dyno tuning this speed inno. ecu as i would if i ordered one from phearable? if so, it'd save me about $100

Yes

If it is a chipped and tunable ECU, it will net you the same results as an ECU from any other supplier.

Even if does have the 28 pin chip soldered in. Most electronics shops can easily take it out and replace it with a socket for a few bucks. The socket will allow a tuner to remove and replace the 28 pin EEPROM chip whenever it is required.

In the future if you end up going with a Neptune or eCtune Demon hardware kit it will plug right in as well.

Nothing replaces actually using a wideband oxygen sensor gauge to monitor your air fuel ratios & dialing in the tune using a tunable ecu solution.
The next best thing is a basemap chip.
Pop the ecu open, see if it is socketed.

You may order a 28 pin eprom chip basemap from our website
http://www.phearable.net/shoppingcar...emap-p-60.html & drop it into the ecu your self.

There is an instructional video on our website on how to change your eprom chip in an already socketed ecu. http://www.phearable.net/tech

Let me know if you have any other questions.

this is chipped right? i can just plug it in, and get it dynod without a problem?
i feel like chipping my p28 would make it a bit more reliable..im not sure if ecus can be unreliable haha..

Is the sst chip on the lower right of the pic soldered on the circuit board or in a socket so it can easily be removed?

Yes, that ecu is socketed/chipped.

It almost looks as though that chip is soldered to the board. Dontoh, is there a thin black socket type part under the 28 pin chip or is the chip directly on top of the board.

If the tune that is on that chip isn't for your car you will need to change it. That is how it works, you make the tune and burn/program the chip and insert it into the ECU. If changes are required you remove the chip, reprogram it and reinstall it.

If you are using a real time programmer (RTP, Ostrich, Demon or Hondata) they have a 28 pin ribbon connector that slides into that spot replacing the chip.

I don't have it with me, but if I remember correctly, there IS a 'thin black socket" under it.. The old owner said it was tuned to the motor (I have the motor/ecu out of the car) so I'm assuming its correct..

As far as real time programming, I'm fine with admitting that it's way over my head haha
