Default cluster issue(tach)

ive searched in the table of contents but no luck. just did an auto to manual swap a few days ago on an eg 4 door, cluster was working perfect and the tach was great. earlier today, the customer brought the car to me and i was fixing other issues. then as i was testing fixed issues, the cluster dropped to the 0 line. then after that, i switched from 5th to 4th and then the tach did a full sweep almost like an R1 does, then went all the way past the 9k mark(i was doing like maybe 3k tops) and went to the other side of the tach where the resting pin is.

i then later took the cluster apart, removed the 3 screws, cleaned the + and - terminals, re installed, then started and the tach worked fine(roughly about 30 secs of car running). THEN i go to start the car back up again about an hour or so later, and no movement at all. even drove up to 15 miles back to my house from where i was at and still nothing.

any insight?

yes, well, its the original out of the donor car i used for parts when i did the auto to manual swap. unmodified, really the only thing i modified was the actual mph part which i took the original mph gauge out of the auto cluster and put in to the manual cluster just to keep the correct mileage in the right car.

You did an odometer swap, did they have problems with the tach before the cluster swap? Im thinking the tach on that cluster is bad. Trt checking all connections make sure pins are seated correctly and you have no tears in wires. If you have an extra cluster try swapping just to see if the problem continues

took the entire tach apart, checked the connections all over then recalibrated it and then brought the calibration back down because it was twitching a little bit.
