Hey guys, my D15 has been giving me a ton of problems with ignition timing.

When I first bought the car I thought it was a maintenance fix, so I replaced all the obvious pieces you would if your car was sputtering. Seafoamed it and all that jazz too.

Well I've concluded that it's the ignition timing. Problem is, I have NO timing covers whatsoever on the car. The other day I tweaked the dizzy enough to where the car didn't sputter at all, or even attempt to. A week later, it's acting like it was before I "fixed" it.

Why would that happen? The hold down bolts are all tight and it has no way to move? Any ideas?

(spare me the "get a timing cover" speech, I plan on it.)

first question would be are u getting any cel's? have u checked the mechanical timing? then after that set the ignition timing and be sure to jump the service connector when u set timing. this isn't a guessing game and move it where u want it. don't just try to move the distributor to temporarily fix it; its obviously not running rite for a reason. diagnose it some more and let us know. line up the timing belt to tdc and see what u have. you don't need the outer covers to determine whether its in time or not.

 

if your not sure the crank was set to TDC when timing belt was put on, just plug spark plug 1 get like a 12 inch extension put it down the hole rotate the crank til the piston comes all they way up right before it goes back down thats TDC, then set the cam like normal

 

CEL I have is auto trans sensor (It's a manual trans, wrong harness?). I know how to do the mechanical timing, but how am I supposed to do the ignition timing without the cover?

 

you may just want to make a mark on the block where the covers mark should be, thats the only thing i could think of short of getting a cover. wish i had more input or could help

 

when you shoot it mark on the block where the tdc mark is on the oil pump so u can see it(w/yellow marker or something). then when u shoot it line it up with the farthest mark on the crank pulley. u will aim just behind(firewall side) the bracket on the block that the drivers side engine mount mounts to. aim downward on a slight angle to the mark u made. the pointer is usually directly in the top middle of the crank pulley. the sight to line the pointer up is about 2inches up form the pointer and about 1/4" toward the front of the car. heres a picture i drew in paint to kind of illustrate what im trying to say. its just a drawling its not perfect.

As u see the angle it will line up with the mark on the oil pump that is slightly on the backside of the crank pulley a little bit.

 

Im sorry, maybe its that I just woke up and Im tired, but that confused the hell out of me

 

What exactly is the problem?

Total set up -- 93 Civic, D15B, ECU, etc.?

Exactly what parts have been replaced?

Check the mechanical timing and then install the belt covers so that you can properly adjust the ignition timing.

 

 

Usually only once the cars warm, the engine will sputter/backfire in low RPM. Stock ECU as far as I know, I have a cold air intake, exhaust mani, and a muffler.

I replaced plugs, rotor, cap, and fuel filter

Yeah I know.. I gotta get to that, just seeing if anyone had a general idea of where the dizzy should be to be close to spec.

Well you won't know that until you get the timing covers on. Guessing+Timing=Fail.
