Default d16y8, comes out of 2nd easily

99 civic ex, d16y8. about 120k. 5spd.

i've noticed recently that the shifter comes out of 2nd gear easily. mainly when im in a low rpm or turning slow corners, going through a parking lot, intersections.. things like that..

at first i thought i was pushing it out of gear because i keep my hand on the shifter, but ive realized that is not the case, the car will sometime just pop out of 2nd. and 2nd only...

any thoughts, questions, comments or ideas??

TIA

i don't think it would be your mounts. you probably have a worn synchro sleeve

It is very common on the D series for the countershaft bottom bearing to walk up causing a 2nd pop out.

how serious is this? is it an easy fix? does this require a rebuild eventually?

thank you for your timely responses guys.

You will need to open the trans to see what is causing the problem. With 120K on it, plan on a rebuild.

I've seen a lot of these now, mostly in Y8s, Transmission has to be taken apart and you'll need to stake the case around the bearing in a few places with a center punch. Plan on replacing at least one bearing if not more and the seal under the input shaft bearing at a bare minimum. Ideally check everything else over as well.

Probably will not cause any major damage to go for a while with the pop out of 2nd as long as it does not develop a leak or start making noise.
