When/at what mileage should I replace the timing belt/water pump on my 93 Accord EXR?
I recently bought a 1993 Honda Accord EX-R (EX-R is a Cdn. Model, in the U.S. it's called the EX) with 64,000 Km or 40,000 miles that is still on its first timing belt and water pump. Should I replace my Accord's timing belt and water pump as soon as possible if I intend to drive it anytime soon? If not, how much longer could the original timing belt and water pump last? Are there any other parts of the engine that should be replaced or adjusted when the timing belt and water pump are replaced? If not, how much longer would these parts in addition to the timing belt and water pump last?
if it were my car and in fact that it has the original t-belt, i'd change it, because its 18 years old. i think the time span is about 105,000 miles or 10 years... give or take.. since you have the timing belt covers off, i'd replace the cam seal, crank seal, balancer shaft seal, water pump, and install a balancer seal retainer. the balancer shaft seal is notorious for popping out and pissing oil. also i'd change the outside drive belts, since they are off and fairly cheap. you dont want the timing belt snapping on you while your out somewhere driving and leave you stranded w/ bent valves. which will be more expensive and more down time. but thats if it were my car and i was planning on keeping it for a very long time.
That's a pretty sweet find, what condition is the body in?
As for the belts seals and water pump, replace it all now. Also you should do the valve adjustment while the valve cover is off. The recommended duration for the timing belts is every 100,000km or 60 months (5 years), which ever comes first. I'd have to say your well over the 60 months...
