Is it normal to see metal dust in a rebuild motor?
Hi guys,is it normal to see some metal dust and some flakes in a full rebuild motor?the car has been running for 30 minutes and hasnt been moved out of the garage ,but i noticed some flakes just like i spun a bearing,the builder and other mechanics told me that i was normal due to honning the sleeves working on the head new seats polishing the ports ect.is he telling me the truth is this normal?or do this are coming from the bearings?the car has everything newbut the rods and the crank thanks for you comments guys!

If it is small shavings yes that is the break in period. If you see chunks then prob not. but only time will tell if it is bad you will know. Run it easy for bout 1000 miles just to be sure. Give it a good break in period.
Just got mine going after a full rebuild (sleeves, valges, guides, cams, pistons, rings, etc).
I could see a fine 'dust' in the oil sitting on top of the cam caps (etc) when I lifted the valve cover - this after a a few starts as I was tuning and adjusting.
I'd purchased 30W non-detergent to get me through that first hour or so. I then changed it and the filter for break-in oil that I plan to use for 500mi. After that, in goes the good stuff.
At least, that is the plan d'jour based upon reviewing a lot of posts...

Use a magnetic drain plug to pick up those shavings. I wouldn't worry so much about it. I've had some shavings picked up on the MDP after a few oil changes with no issues after a complete rebuild.
