I just recently bought a 1990 civic dx. It is still dual point. When i bought the car it wouldn't run and i noticed the fuel pump wouldn't cut on so i replaced the main relay. I drove the car and it ran flawless for about 5 mins then check engine light and it sounds like its running on 2 or 3 cylinders then finally cuts off. the car is throwing codes 7-tps, and 20 eld. I have since put new plugs, wires, fuel filter, and main relay on the car and still runs bad. I put a new dizzy,ecu, underhood fusebox, all from running car and still runs horrible once check engine light comes on. The car is completely stock other than full exhaust. I did take the originally ecu apart and it had a jun pr3 chip in it. thats why i replaced the ecu. The car idles great and sounds good and revs up without a sputter until the check engine light comes on and runs absolutely horrible then ends up dying. Any ideas or areas to focus on. I need this for a daily. I have tried everything i can think and replaced all major components with working components. THanks ahead of time for any info.

 

The wiring looks to be in good shape.no wires have been cut.

 

Replace the TPS.

 

Which means you should look at getting a good used throttlebody.

 

Would a tps cause it to run that bad.

 

i don't think it would cause it to completely stall. try disconnecting the tps and see how it runs. Your check engine light should come on when you try to run it like this.

You tried disconnecting the TPS connector and it stalled/ran like it was on 2 cylinders?

do you mean code 30 meaning it blinks 30 times? How long will it run on 2 cylinders? Did you try pulling spark plug wires one at a time to determine which spark plug is not firing?

I'm going through some engine idling and oil burning issues too. Search how to clean your idle air control valve (IACV) and Pressure? Crankcase Valve (PCV). My 90 Civic Std has 138k and i found lots of carbon deposits in my PCV and cleaning the IACV made my idle go down (though still all over the place due to bad TPS).

 

i meant code 20. at idle when i first crank the car the car runs fine and idles fine. when i rev it up it sounds normal. its when i drive it the check engine light comes on and it runs horrible. i just didnt think a tps would cause to run that horrible. It doesnt have a idle issue its when i drive it.
