Default Throttle position - TPS - problem

Hi folks

My first post here, so please bear with me.

I have a really frustrating problem with my 1999 Integra Type-R. Basically, the car is slightly hesitant under light throttle openings and feels a bit jerky and not nice to drive, though when the throttle is fully open it seems fine and vtec cuts in fine. I have done some research on this and see that the TPS being poorly adjusted can sometimes cause this problem.

I believe that there should be a 5v signal to the TPS with 0.5 v when the throttle is closed and 4.5 when it is fully open. I have checked mine and, initially, couldn't find any voltage at all! Then, after a while I managed to get a 3.8 v signal and 0.28 v on closed throttle with about 1.5v on full throttle. I have just been out to the car again to check these value for the benefit of this post and can only get about 0.2v on the signal and nothing at all when opening the throttle.

So... I have some sort of a problem here which seems to be irregular. As an electrical novice, my question is whether this is due to a problem with voltage arriving at the TPS or whether it just shows that the TPS has failed. If it is the former, where should I be looking for problems?

Out of interest, I have measured the resistance between the negative terminal of the TPS and the negative on the battery and it shows about 7 ohms - isn't that a bit high?

I have this sneaking suspicion that my running problems may be down to a poor earth or something, but am lost - all help gratefully received!

How are you checking the voltage? Are you back pinning it or removing some of the covering on the wire? Ensure you are getting an accurate reading before continuing.

I recently checked my tps sensor and it can be tricky to get a steady reading.

If your value is correct, adjust the sensor until its back in spec. If you can't do this by adjusting it, then replace the tps sensor with a used one or an aftermarket one.

7 ohms does sound high, but you could have grounds, or that reading was off...

My car was having problems and it was the O2 sensor, everyone said it should throw a code but it did not. It was fine underfull throttle but would jerk under partial throttle and if the car was fully warm it would occasionally bog down. The two main things IMO is TPS and O2. Check both, It can be hard to access the tps but until your are positive you have reached it i would not credit .2V as it being dead, that seems to low.

Hi folks, thanks for the feedback.

OK, firstly, I recently replaced the O2 sensor as it was my first thought for poor running, so hopefully that should be OK.

In my case it is fairly easy to access the terminals on the TPS as, during a recent engine rebuild (I've not been lucky with this car!), I damaged the TPS housing where the wires come out and had to solder some new leads on to the back of the TPS. I am able to measure the values off the original tabs of the TPS and also after the connector where they join the loom and these values are the same, therefore I am satisfied that the connection itself is fine.

My concern was why I only have 3.8 v at the signal - if this is too low then surely the maximum value will also be reduced? Does this point to a poor earth elsewhere in the system or is there a main connector lead somewhere that I should be checking out?

Thanks again.

in for advise, im troubleshooting the same issue on my 2000 gsr.
If i hold the throttle part open it will drop on its own without me letting up.
I have to add more gas to stay at a consistent rpm.
