smoke and high idle

smoke and high idle
this just started yesterday. when I start my after its been sitting for awhile a lot of smoke comes out of the exhaust and also the car has been idling high off and on

There is not enough information; what color of smoke and what do you mean by idling high on and off? Do you mean the idle fluctuates up and down or that it revs for a while then goes back to normal?
