I replaced my passenger side cv shaft because it was blown, the install went fine and everything seemed just fine. I then replaced my trans fluid, and a few days later I noticed I'm leaking trans fluid right in the area of the cv shaft, I'm assuming it's from a bad seal where the shaft meets the trans? Is there anything I can do to stop the leak?

 

I would clean the whole area and try to isolate where the leak is coming from exactly. Check your drain and fill plugs just to be sure. If your seals are old and dry..it is easy for them to tear/fall apart or if you tagged them during the cv install they could have also gotten damaged. Pull the axle out again and pop the seal out and replace with a new one. They are pretty inexpensive. Just use caution when re-installing the axle. Good luck!

 

Did that today, plugs are all tight no leaks, little drop was forming under the cv shaft. Could over filling the trans cause that? I think I may have put in too much, I filled it up till the filler hole was pouring fluid back out, but it wasn't as low dribble it was a steady flow

 

over filling in the tranny wont leak out form the axle seals. kinda sounds like the seal is bad. but give it another good clean and see if it still leaks on your floor.

 

In an extreme case..yes it can blow through the axles seals and have seen it happen once. However in your case I don't think that is the issue. I would replace the seal. While you have the axle out...use a set of measuring calipers and measure the inboard axle stub and make sure that matches your old one...you never know! Could be a tad off?? But more than likely the seal.

 

or could have a bad diff bearing allowing the extra movement under load.

 

It's not a big enough leak that I'm gonna worry about it, I'm swapping the motor sooner or later anyway. I'll just keep an eye on the level, thanks.
