h22a1 auto tensioner
i might get trolled for this but here goes..i have a newb question....what is the auto tensioner for? and also how does it work for me since i have done the balance shaft elimination kit on it my h22a1..do i leave the tensioner there and leave the pulleys also?
welll... the tensioner keeps the timing belt tight. and you need to swap it to the h23 manual tensioner because if you dont your gonna turn it over and blow ur motor. those auto tensioners are gypsies.
The balance shaft belt and the timing belt are only related because they run off the crank and behind the dust cover. Functionally they're not related.
The the "auto-tensioner" is a hydraulic mechanism to keep the timing belt tight, if it fails, you can get slack in your timing belt causing catastrophic failure, pistons hitting valves nastiness. The original "auto-tensioner" was prone to failure, but has been superseded by an updated version.
Most people still don't trust the new ones and remove the hydraulic tensioner in favor of the mechanical tensioner from the H23. At high engine speeds and with modified cars I would recommend the conversion.
^ sums it up fairly nicely, I personally bought a brand new auto tensioner from Honda when I got my JDM H22 and it never worked right [I heard belt slap at idle] till I had Honda pull it apart and replace it about a week after I got it running. Now that motor is converted to the mechanical tensioner.
There are plenty of write ups on the conversion, and kaizenspeed kstuned.com sells a kit for those of us too lazy to look up the info ourselves.
