Icon2 Gsr vs type r...cant make up my mind

Im debating over a jdm GSR with LSD 4 2,900....or a jdm type R for around 3,500 to 4,000....i know they both have their good qualities. But i want something reliable, fast enough to wax all my buddies that have been talking smack about my car. So idk which 1 to choose from. Which one would be better off in the long run. And i will be driving it stock for awhile because i am a poor student living by myself. So i was wondering what is honda tech's view?

Both. Keep a spare for when you blow up the first engine from street racing your buddies after they talk smack and you have to shut their mouths for them. If you're a poor student you should be dropping that coin on education and books.

I swear I hate these "help me spend my money" threads.

agree w/ 1st reply but for some .02...get the b18c. The itr motor is over-rated, and in the long-run you're gonna build the gsr anyway. Same displacement w/ endless possibilities for a clean, quality, fun build. Save money now and settle with the gsr. You'll be happy

Well, a Type-R isnt going to give you the reliability of a GSR. But, a GSR is reliable and will last longer but will not be as quick as the Type-R. It depends what other cars you have.

Buy whatever you want to impress and show off to people. Hate to be harsh but....for the sake of others, make up your own damn mind. What should I buy, what should I eat, what should I wear.....?

Before asking those lame questions, do some research and buy what you want...or can afford. Don't just buy something and then attempt to make it work without any knowledge of what you're doing. Rome wasn't built in one day. Those individuals had a plan. You should too.

I too would go with the gsr since replacement parts for an ITR are outrageously priced. If its an itr part you have to tack on an extra 400 to 1200 bux to the price by default.

b-series replacement parts are all damn near the same and interchangeable...the point is, buying a itr swap from an importer is dumb and over priced... if you stumple upon one on craigslist or from a friend for a price they and you know is reasonable...thats a different story

If the pkg is only and extra $600-700, it would be worth going for the type R....why?

- better cams
- higher compression pistons and stronger rods
- better geared transmission and brace
- better cylinder head with dual valve springs and better valves
- better exhaust manifold

Those extra's seem well worth it to me for the money

If you're planning on spanking your buddies I'm guessing you'll prob be street racing too. Doesn't matter which you get if that's the case, it'll be stolen soon enough sad to say.

Thanks for all the opinions, i am not exactly new to the world and like i dont know what research is about, ive done tons of it! I basically wanted to know if the type R would be worth the extra money. Man, i dont know why you other guys are always bagging on somebody on this site, we are just people asking questions, so we can become more knowledgable, not everyone was born with k20 stuck on our minds, and i dont think u guys who just wait around for a guy like me to ask a simple question, then roast us about our lives and choices are cool. If you guys dont have nothing nice to say, dont discourage anybody else on their dreams. And i would love 4 someone to attempt to steal my car, i basically sleep in that bad boi

If you were referring to me, "bashing" on your dreams, that's not my intentions. I'm saying that it's your car, your money, your ordeal. If you want to paint your car pink or Orange sherbert...go ahead. Honda swaps have been around since the early 90's. Not everyone can afford them. Buy what you want. I'm sure you already have your mind set so DO IT.

The question was about A choice about an engine swap not about "impressing" my friends...ive been saving for like 2 years and they always bashing about my car is so slow...and its not like i dont want my car to be fast, i want it to be done right....

Then go all out. Get an ITR engine. Your real problem is worrying about what your friends think.

Personally, if you're going to build the engine, or run boost, go with the GS-R (i'd almost say go with a non-LSD tranny and buy a good aftermarket Mfactory LSD for it, stock non type R LSDs are viscous and don't hold up all that well, and they use an odd 14 bolt ring gear)

If you're planning to put the engine in and leave it alone and run NA, then I think the ITR is the better choice.

100k miles in on my 1997 JDM R and not even a hint of power loss, blow by, etc.

Responsible maintenance and use will see great reliability out of either of these motors.

i'd say boost your single cam, have them really drop their jaws when you're makin 300hp on that "puny single slam". for four grand you can have an INSANE set up with lsd built, plus all would be minty fresh

^ Very fun. Armchair racers would be amazed at what a gutted civic with 200 whp can do.

^ lolwut? Find me a single engine part that is more expensive for ITR than GSR. The ONLY thing I can think of would be the cams, and those aren't even that expensive.

It would appear anyone with a brain would make the same conclusion

honestly man your gonna get alot of good and bad info on here alot of hate and love.. as soon as i saw the title of the thread i knew this was gonna b fun to read because honestly as much as i like honda tech theres ALOT of haters and dumb people with 10 post saying dumb s**t. back to the question

if you wanna smoke your buddys and your thinking of buying a type r. i personally would tell you go big or go home. go J series. its less expensive than a K and has more power and torque than one. just my 2 cents. save up for it do your research and c if your up to it. if not just buy a b16 cheap fun and reliable.
