Default d16A6 block or d16Y8 block

so im building a little n/a setup and im going to to be putting after market rods and pistons in the block. i have an a6 block in my car and a y8 block in my shed. im wondering what block would be better to use. there will be a Z6 head going on it.

should i take the a6 block out of my car and use that or is the y8 block just as good, or better in any way?

What advantage does steel crank caps bring?

The y8 is known to have the weaker oil pump of all d-series.
Have you thought about using a d17 crank and rods in the a6 block? Would make a mean stroked d-series mini-me.

Why do you say that? Why just the Y8?

IIRC all the Y motors use the same oil pump.

well i have a y8 block in my shed and i was going to put a d17 crank in it and go from there with an z6 head but if they have the weakest oil pumps then i might take the a6 our of my car next winter and do it then or find a cheap z6 block around...

Thanks

im shooting for around 150 at the wheels ill be getting a bizi 3 cam and valve train, mild port. ITB's and bizi rods and custom pistons, bizi header or maybe s.m.s. since you can run a full rad with it and i have an ef with a full rad. im probably spending 3500 on the motor so i want to start with the best block since i can get any d series block for no more then 300$

yeah man, thanks for the links. that was exactly what i was looking for.

also i have read that some d series bottom ends use different bearing styles or different bearing material for the crank bearings. does this make any difference and is it true

A6 block has still crank caps. This makes them stronger for less crank distortion if you are trying to rev the motor. You can grab a washer from lowes or home depot that fits the bore the oil pressure spring to tension it up. This will increase oil pressure. IF you are serious about the sohc i would clean up the entrances to the oil passages by the oil pump(with a dremel) Its hard to explain and i have no pics. All dseries pumps are weak just the Y series are weaker. A6 or Z6 best blocks the Cable SI trans is the best followed by the Y8 trans
