Hmm so I was wondering what could cause a valve tap in a Jetta, and if its not something a beginner should attempt to diagnose. I was thinking of grabbing a haynes manual and taking the engine apart to see whats going on in there. Unrecommended?

It could be many things. Do Jetta's use lifters or cam followers?

 

Might want to ask VWVortex.

You could damage the engine if it's major. You may want to ask the Vdub guys, it may be something common.
